I have my Plex Media Server installed on a OneDrive folder located on an external drive. I need to move it to a new PC using the same external drive. Any thoughts on how to accomplish this? I want to keep it on a OneDrive folder so it can be backed up automatically. That OneDrive folder needs to be on an external drive since the internal is too small. Should I copy the registry entries, uninstall Plex and then move the drive and get OneDrive working properly and then re-install after I move the drive over? Will I lose any metadata? I have manually matched all my movies as I use a non-standard naming convention for my files. Thanks.
Make sure the external drive has the same drive letter on both systems.
You’ll need to move the Plex data folder (database, metadata, etc) to the new system and copy some registry entries.
See this support article:
However… having the actual app on that OneDrive folder will do you no good.
The Plex Media Server on your Windows machine is storing critical configuration information in the Windows Registry. If you simply execute the Plex Media Server, that’ll establish a new server on the new machine.
If you’re going to do that. Stop the Plex Media Server from the new machine after running it for the first time and perform the steps of moving the Plex Media Server data folder – except for moving the newly created data directory on the new machine, point it to wherever your original server keeps its data directory.
Keep in mind:
Plex is not designed to run as a “portable” application that you’ll simply plug into a device and run. There’s a risk this will break your setup for good.
