I am having a hard time naming video webinars and podcasts. Since they are usually date based, I have named them as TV Shows using the following format:
Show Name - s2019e20190613 - Show Title
Plex sorts the webinars into folders by Show Name, then Season 2019, but when I go into the season, the episode is titled ‘Episode 20190613’ but not the Show TItle (i.e. ‘Show Title’, or ‘20190613 - Show Title’ or even ‘Episode 20190613 - Show Title’.).
I’ve tried removing the hyphen between the episode number and the Show Title, but still can’t get the Show Title to show.
Is there a better/different way to name video (and audio) recordings so they can be displayed with the show titles?
Plex doesn’t consider the episode name you include in the file name… that’s purely for your own benefit when accessing those files in your file manager.
If your files are in mp4/m4v format you can configure that library to consider the embedded metadata. If you include the actual episode title in the file’s metadata, Plex can use it when adding the file to your library (should work best when using the Personal Media Shows agent).
I checked my file and my Plex server. My mp4 DOES have the title in the file’s metadata, AND I do have the Personal Media Shows agent enabled. However, all that gets ‘automatically’ configured for the title is the numeric episode number, which is the date of the program.
Do I have to manually edit the title for each mp4 file, or is there some other step I’m missing?
Also make sure Local Media Assets is enabled for Personal Media Shows. that is what picks up embedded metadata and side files like subtitles and images.
I just did a test by editing the embedded Title field in this mp4 and it picked it up correctly. “TEST episode Title” is what i entered in the files embedded metadata
Just changed the agent from TVDB to Personal Media Shows and refreshed the metadata. The titles are more informative now. Each mp4 now shows showname, episode number and show title, which is a little lengthy. Is there a way to edit the
agent so it only shows the show title, or episode number and show title? When you’ve already drilled down to the showname, it’s a little redundant to also show the showname before the episode number and title.
Thanks. Yes, I did have Local Media Assets enabled. However, as some of these are webinar recordings I’ve made, I would need to attach the images and subtitles in the mp4 files themselves. Podcasts downloaded from the web ‘should’ have these already in place.
It uses the TITLE field as the episode title and the ALBUM field as the show name. (not sure what you have in those fields)
subtitles and images can be placed next to the file named the same as the file. And for the show image as a whole just the show name for image but at the top level if you have season folders
