Plex newbie here. I’ve a number of home videos categorized - school, college, vacation, events, etc. Right now, Plex bunches all videos together. I would like to understand if it’s possible to organize these similar to TV series - categories as TV show name, year (in some cases) as seasons and contents therein. Would appreciate if anybody has some idea on how to do this. I’ve been researching online but was not able to achieve the above.
If it’s relevant, I’m running the latest PMS on Synology DS1821+
It’s easier to put them in TV Show Libraries - then Fix Match and change to the Personal Media Agent.
After that you can edit them into approved TV Show structures then edit:
TV Show Library Folder/
.....Family Stuff 2020/
.......Season 01/
.........Family Stuff 2020 - S01E01 - The Event.xxx
.........Family Stuff 2020 - S01E02 - The Next Event.xxx
editing them into a TV Show Format.
If there’s a way to do that in an Other Videos Library - I’m not sure anyone has discovered it yet 'cause nothing I’ve ever tried ever worked.
No, you won’t be able to edit Season Names into anything other than:
Season 01
Season 02
etc.
Plex will NOT pick up the episode name automatically - without a lot of drama.
It’s a work-around that works, but not without some labor on your part.
Plex needs an Other TV Show Library, considering the number of times this ‘work-around’ is employed to use a TV Show layout for Home Video type material. <—with more and friendlier options. <—until that happens, we have The Personal Media Agent and a lot of Manual Labor.
Or you keep them as regular home videos and group them into collections. You can create collections manually. Alternatively you can setup that Other Video type library to use embedded metadata – if I remember correctly, Plex reads the Album tag of a movie file as a collection and will create a new collection accordingly if a file has that tag (or group it into a same-named existing collection).
