How to setup Server on Linux Raspberry Pi - For a beginner

Hello everyone,

I have been using Plex for some time on my personal PC. I decided to move the server to something a little cheaper and that I can keep powered on 24/7. I just got my Raspberry Pi 4 and attempted following the steps, but I understood almost nothing as I have close to zero Linux experience.
I got PMS downloaded and running, although, when I try to tell Plex which directories to look for media in, it will not let me navigate any further into the external hard drive I have connected to it.
It is NTFS, so I installed some sort of app that allowed me to actually see the hard drive. Once I did that, I was able to play the music and movies on it just fine. But Plex was not able to navigate into the drive.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Your issue is probably a permissions issue. Plex runs as the Plex user in the Plex group on Linux. The Plex user needs to have read write and execute privs on the external drive. It can be NTFS, that is not an issue as most Linux distros now support that filesystem pretty well. The easiest thing to do to give access to Plex on the external drive is to set what is called the setuid bit as the root user on the mount point. A little google action will help you find the specific command to do that.

I’ll attempt that now. Thanks for your reply!

If you are mounting NTFS drives, this will be of assistance in getting the mounts direct and stable.

It took me a while, being brand new to this stuff. But I finally got through all of that article and it works perfectly! Thank you so much!
