So, I always have the latest versions of Plex Media Player & Server and same with my bud. Anyways, I was wondering, does anyone know how to stream a friend’s Plex server to VLC? I’ve found this link which I’ve attempted to get working https://github.com/Kayomani/PlexExternalPlayer however, I haven’t been capable of getting it to work. I want to know because I really need to fix the dynamic range compression. If anyone has any information regarding how to stream a friend’s Plex server to VLC, I’d greatly appreciate the help, thanks.
I think I’m suffering the same as you under Plex and lack of dynamic compression for night time viewing.
For playing stuff to the local LAN to an alternate client like VLC, I have a share into the Plex library that can be mounted with read only access.
For playing stuff to a remote friend’s alternate player, I would probably setup a VPN server on my NAS where the Plex Server is. Then the remote user could very safely become a VPN client to me and thus appear as just another user on my local LAN who could mount the already available network share that exposes the Plex library as read only.
You cannot access remote Plex servers with DLNA. DLNA is working only within a local network.
VLC doesn’t talk “plex”, so DLNA is all it can use.
Here is a workaround using Plex Media Player for your audio level issue:

If it was local network you could always just use the Universal Plug n Play in VLC media player. Also, there’s no way I could afford NAS but thanks that’s a really smart idea.
Thanks, I will test this out in Plex Media Player.
There is an API call that can supply a VNC compatible stream URL for any media in the library. However…!!! Using this method doesn’t indicate any activity on any monitoring software, like the plex dashboard and tautulli, as well as the playback controls are broken.
It’s how someone can cloak a stream using a python script and someones plex token.

Thanks for the dynamic compression tips.
BDow you don’t need a NAS in my suggestion. Whatever comp is running the PMS can also run OpenVPN and act as a VPN server, allowing only a specific friend to log in to your local network.
Good luck!
I use IPVanish but I will look into this, thanks.
