HW Transcoding i7 and Nvidia GPU

Server Version#:
Player Version#:

I am building a new server that will have an i7 8700K and have an Nvidia 750 Ti. My question is how will PMS decide where to do HW transcoding? Will it only use the iGP, GPU, or both as it needs more processing power? I have two monitors that will be connected, will it matter where I connect them(both to GPU or 1 to GPU and one to motherboard)?

Thanks

linux or windows?

your cpu is going to have a far more capable gpu transcoding than the 750, I would suggest just removing the 750.

Thanks for the response. The server will be running Windows 10 and I do use it during the day as my main computer. I also run a few games that require the Nvidia 750 Ti. I am hoping that when I am not using the computer and the screen turns off the 750Ti will draw minimal power and the i7 will only be used by PMS.

When I enable HW transcoding the task manager shows activity in the Nvidia GPU but no activity in the Intel UHD GPU. How can I get the Intel GPU to do the transcoding and not Nvidia?

You’d have to make the intel HD GPU your primary display device in order for plex to use it for transcoding.

In short, you’d have to remove the 750ti (you could disable it device manager) and run your display off the iGPU.

I am really surprised these details aren’t clearly spelled out in one place telling what must be done to enable HW transcoding. I have dual monitors on my computer and as a stop gap I moved one to the motherboard and left one connected to my Nvidia Gpu. When I want to game I select the monitor connected to Nvidia as primary but most of the time I select the monitor connected to the motherboard as primary this allows PMS do some of the hw transcoding on the i7. I still see some transcoding being done on the Nvidia gpu but atleast it is not all. I tested Emby to see how they handle the issue and they give complete control over which device does what. I hope Plex can do the same soon.
