HW vs Software encoding: CPU Usage?

Hi,

Having no plex pass, I see Plex on my Synology DS918+ taking up 75 percent CPU when playing Harry Potter and the Philospher’s Stone in 1080P with PGS subs.

What would a CPU usage estimate for this be with HW transcoding / plex pass enabled)? My DS918+ has 4 gigs of RAM and no ssd cache. It’s just the regular 4GB ram vers.

I have the lastest Synology 64 bit package installed manually from the Plex site.

Thanks,

Without knowing much more about the media itself (XML) and the player (with playback settings) , it is impossible to even guess.

I can tell you definitively that burning in subtitles (which PGS requires) is a CPU-only function.
I can also tell you decoding HEVC, which the CPU can’t do, can easily be done by hardware transcoding.

If you exclude subtitles, HEVC 2160p 5.1 audio -> H264 1080p stereo (for your tablet) is trivial and perhaps 20% total load (?). Again, this depends on bitrate of the source material. I presume high bit rate here (20+ Mbps)

Player was Plexweb player. With original quality, 22 mbit I think. How can I show you xml?

Hover over the item; see the ellipsis expose; click it; click Get Info. Click “View XML” in the popup

Can’t copy XML content???

In Chrome, Highlight the XML, press Control+C, the XML is now copied.

Paste with Control+V
