My server version is 1.41.4.9463, and my host is an iMac (Intel Core i7, Radeon Pro 560X). After enabling “Enable HEVC video Encoding (experimental),” some videos are transcoded to HEVC, while others are transcoded to H264. I have a Plex Pass, and the videos transcoded to HEVC use HW acceleration, whereas those transcoded to H264 do not and use CPU transcoding.
When I disable HEVC video Encoding, all videos are transcoded to H264, and they all use HW transcoding. I would like you to investigate this issue. It seems to occur only on certain devices, such as Macs with M-series chips, where this problem does not exist.
Additionally, enabling “Enable HEVC video Encoding (experimental)” causes Plex on Mac to be unable to transcode.
I performed transcoding operations on multiple videos with the “Enable HEVC video Encoding (experimental)” feature both disabled and enabled, successfully reproducing the issue I reported. I will send the logs to you via private message—please check them.
@x1ao4 Thanks for your logs and all the other additional details. I’ve created an internal issue for tracking. While the ability to select HEVC encoding is showing as available, with your specific host (iMac with Intel CPU and AMD GPU) it is running into a problem. I would suggest disabling this setting for now while we continue to investigate. Thanks again for reporting and for your patience.
