HEVC Encoding HW not working on some movies

Server Version#: 1.43.0.10162
Player Version#: several

Just noticed I am not able to playback one specific video remotely. Plex client on Apple TV spins forever and eventually crashed. I was able to pinpoint it to HEVC encoding. When I turn that off, the video is transcoded to x264 with SDR and play. If enabled it tries to encode it to HEVC and it crashes.

So I thought it is a general issue with HEVC encoding or this client. So I tried HEVC encoding on the same client with other movies or series (SDR x264 and HDR x265 sources) and it works like a charm with other files, just not that one.

And HEVC encoding with that specific movie on other clients (Mac OS plex client to name one) also keeps spinning and nothing happens. Tautulli claims the movie is transcoding and running but the client remains silent. Again: Just this one file.

Where/How can I debug this further?

I am using an Nvidia A2000 and plex is running within a docker container.

That’s super helpful. Thanks. I missed that post.

Any idea of the easiest way to produce samples for the Plex guys? Can’t be a good idea to have them download a 12-80GB file. But the file needs to be “similar” enough to reproduce the issue.

But this at least means I am not alone and they are working on it. As long as it is just one or two files I am “ok”.

The support article provides some methods for producing samples.
