[Implemented] Add support for av1 coding standard

+1 for AV1 Coding Support

Only solution at the time is too use other software that support av1 like emby.

It’s been a few more months… Nothing has changed except the addition of privacy invasion features that practically nobody asked for and eveybody else has to deal with…

+1, please I want this!

+1 for AV1 support.

Any news on when this might happen? Video Codecs are a fairly basic Plex, and I am not aware of any big technical hurdles to this…

Please add support for AV1!

Maybe Plex could start with very basic av1 support? Like only direct-play and direct stream? Let the player allow to try to play av1 content, if it will not support it, just fail - like it is now.
(exoplayer supports it since Oct. 2019, for the Desktop players you could change the mpv lib and get av1 compatibility that way)

And later down the road include av1 transcoding?

I’ve been a paying Plex Pass customer for 4 years now. It is unacceptable that AV1 support hasn’t been implemented by now. The job of a media server is to stream video content. AV1 is the next-gen codec for video streaming and support is expanding, even more, every day. It’s already used in production in a lot of places. Please consider making this a higher priority.

As of now, I have switched. I have a post as to why, in General Discusions under my ID. Good luck to you all.

Ok Plex…It’s been over 2 years since this was opened up. Adding AV1 support should be trivial!
The inability to serve AV1 files from Plex is insane.

While I understand lots of client devices are yet to support direct streaming AV1, it is changing.
More main stream players are switching to AV1 and I’m sure you will see client devices following suit.

Original :
-rw-r–r–+ 1 mikesmith docker 726M May 5 2021 ā€˜1080p.mkv’
HEVC :
-rw-rw-r-- 1 mikesmith mikesmith 392M Dec 29 10:30 /tmp/test.mkv
AV1 :
-rw-rw-r-- 1 mikesmith mikesmith 158M Dec 29 10:38 /tmp/test2.mkv

I’ve already converted my entire library to HEVC and would like to do the same and go to AV1.
Tests from Emby and Jellyfin work well with AV1 and Plex NOT supporting this is unacceptable.

+1 here as well. If I’m going to have to start converting all my AV1 files, this is the first time since the original mac beta port of XBMC Plex that I’m ever had to ponder other options. ='(

If you change the format option from MP4 to MKV, I believe the options you are looking for will show up.

if playing in the player is the issue then why can’t the server convert it on the fly as it normally does or run it directly as chrome can play these formats.
