[Implemented] Add support for av1 coding standard

Checking in again. I don’t expect this to happen proper any time soon.

What we’ve gotten in the past few months:
Ad supported B Movies and obscure TV which clog up the UI and confuse new users
External links to paid subscription services
Searches for local content linking to said paid services
Continuing to hold your own GPU’s hardware acceleration hostage behind a paywall for no reason
Rebranding that nobody asked for
General monetization features/schemes

What we haven’t gotten:
Support for an industry-wide and rapidly growing codec, which is widely requested, and would be free and easy to implement.

At this point I’ve already migrated my configurations to “the FOSS alternative” and would recommend others who need AV1 to consider biting the bullet as well. I just keep my Plex server around for stubborn users.

I was using a code for 1-month free premium and was considering buying the lifetime subscription, but as a considerable portion of the newer shows I watch, and I assume it will only get larger, is in AV1 I will be using the FOSS alternative.

Nvidia is releasing Av1 hardware encoding support in their 40xx series cards. The market will keep moving onward.

Just ran into this issue today, and I presume it’s going to happen more often in the future. I’d like to start ripping my own files to AV1 in the future due to the openness of the codec as well as the fact that it’s both faster and smaller than HEVC for the same visual quality.

I must admit until seeing this thread earlier I wasn’t particularly familiar with AV1 (I believe VC9 is a competing codec)

I got curious so I grabbed a movie and just wow.

I get that Plex can’t handle AV1 but my main playe is the Apple TV 4K and I use Infuse connected to Plex on that device.
Infuse has supported AV1 and VC9 since August 2019. (Keep up Plex)

Side note. Infuse only supports AV1 in SDR I believe but it looks amazing anyway.

But let’s be honest, at the pace that plex moves there will be a better codec for when they add this one.

Well, I’ve moved on to running emby on my server for now. Setup was slightly more complicated then plex but at least AV1 works. I won’t be back until plex supports AV1. So long and thanks for all the fish!

Sad to see there’s still no basic support for what is quickly becoming a core codec. Not a fan of converting things all the time just because I refuse to move away from the otherwise fantastic Plex offerings ;_;

+1 for AV1 support.
Many Thanks to the Plex Team.

AV1 decode isn’t a thing yet in Plex Media Server, but potential future support was mentioned the announcement of this forum preview release. So there is hope for those of you desperate for this feature.
