looks like AV1 hw support is being rolled into FFMPEG, so hopefully that helps paves the way for eventual plex support.
And it’s mentioned briefly in that article, but worth calling out that Intel QSV AV1 was also added to FFmpeg a ~week ago:
I wonder if the dependency on oneVPL will temporarily complicate things, but eventually simplify them?
Does anybody have any quality comparisons between NVENC and Intel AV1 quality?
as much as I would love a 3rd viable gpu source, intel will never catch up to nv/amd until they can put all that gpu on the cpu itself.
of course, once igpu do become equal (or close enough to), then nv/amd will likely sue them for ‘bundling’ cpu/igpu much like microsoft and google got sued for their ‘bundling’ practices.
Yep, we are way beyond a time where the server should be able to decode and transcode to x264 as a minimum, and with the availability of intel’s arc cards with such excellent AV1 encode quality and low bandwidth in more than real time, encoding to this format should be a given.
AV1 decode is easily able to be utilized in many recent plex devices, and Intel Arc VP9 Hardware encoding is similarly super fast and efficient and decoding requirements for that on players is substantially less than AV1.
I have trialed the intel ARC hardware encoding and it is of very high quality. Even the lowly a380 has the same dual encoders/decoders as their big brothers.
Recent Samsung Exynos has hardware decode, Qualcomm since 845, Recent Firetv 4k devices have hardware AV1 decode, most desktops would manage AV1 software decode 1080p without too much difficulty.
I understand the reticence to enable HEVC x265 encode given the licensing issues that may be brought to bear, but VP9 and AV1 are patent free freely usable technology.
Another +1 for AV1 decoding support
Another +1 for AV1 decoding support
Same here, I encoded some videos in AV1 but now it is not playable through Plex.
Just tried playing AV1. Got the message “Server not Powerful Enough to Transcode” or something like that. Was trying to play on the Plex Mac app. Perhaps before transcoding support for AV1 is added, the ability to play the file in the plex players should be done. Handbrake just added AV1 support. Apparently, unlike its beta version, AV1 requires less processing power to encode and does a better job encoding.
That means AV1 is gong to explode! Its also royalty free, and can be played natively in a browser, supported by giants.
You guys need to get ahead on this. Basic playing support for non-transcoding playing is essential now.
+1 for AV1 support. Seems ludicrous that this has been a requested feature for almost 3 years now with everyone else rushing to support it and Plex seemingly doing nothing about it
+1 the av1 encoding train is coming full force
+1 for AV1 support!!
+1 for AV1 support.
At the bare minimum, at least let us now what hurdles are in place that prevent implementation; in the spirit of good will. I’ll wait as long as it takes. I’m just curious, as I imagine the others are, as to why it hasn’t been implemented yet. Thanks for all your work.

+1 I need AV1 playback as well. All the new media I need to ingest is AV1.
Sorry, but there’s a mistake. Mediatek’s Dimensity 1000 was the first SoC with hardware decoding. Exynos supports AV1 decoding since 2100 (so S21 onwards, also the Pixel 7).
Both Apple and Qualcomm still do not have any hardware decoding for AV1. But it’s true that the SD 845 can playback AV1 by software encoding at least. My old Note 9 had no issues at all and plenty of reserves.
+1 for AV1 support if this isn’t a thing yet
This is crazy, I assumed that this two year long thread … when I got to the bottom I would find that it was implemented. Pretty sad the state of Plex lately…
+1 for AV1 Support it’s no longer just Youtube using AV1 anymore, and it is better than HEVC and h264 now. H264 is not supported by Chromecast with Google TV which means AV1 would be a nice addition for people getting ready to convert their older content to a new container it’d be nice to not have to convert twice.
+1 . AV1 has reached critical mass, folks. Time to prioritize the dev time please.
Shocked this hasn’t been added yet, I usually think of plex being on the forefront of media streaming. +1 for AV1 support.
