[Implemented] Better Subtitle Support

Add support for the Partially supported subtitles (VOBSUB, PGS, SUB/IDX) for at least all desktop clients.

Seconded, most of my subtitles movies are in PGS and SUB/IDX. I mainly use a Roku client though.

Yes, Plex could definitely do with refinement and enhancement of subtitle support. I would especially like to see the restoration of soft subtitle support (srt embedded in MP4/M4V) in Plex. It used to be there, now it isn’t.

I would really love to see the embedded spu style subtitles that Handbrake makes supported. Especially in the Roku client. I know BoxeeBox and XBMC both support them. Its currently the only reason I keep them around.

Roku seems to kind of support them already even, as when they’re enabled they’ll just show garbage instead of the actual subtitle, but at least the media server knows they exist.

I find it’s a bit hit and miss with subtitles embedded with handbrake. I have one series that plays the subtitles fine and another that won’t show them at all (luckily I have srt’s for this one). I think it depends on the DVD you use because the same problem presents it self in media player classic.

As for VOBSUB, PGS, SUB/IDX subtitles I would welcome the some proper support for these types of subtitles as they are usually my main source for watching movies and tv series with subtitles mainly because when I try convert the vobsubs to srt I end up with that many typos that they are unreadable.

I’d like to see Plex support subtitles in obvious places that it hasn’t all year. Right now the mobile clients seem to be the only ones that can get subtitles when transcoding. The web client can’t and the desktop client can’t. Yet it’s obvious that such a stream can be requested of the server since those mobile clients do it just fine. I don’t get why the server is perfectly capable, the clients are perfectly capable, the glue has been done for some platforms, and yet others just sit there with broken subtitle support. I’m traveling for nearly two months and rather bitter about the whole situation, as it means my library of anime - including ongoing shows and such - is completely unusable.

I’m surprised that this request hasn’t been up-voted more. I guess most Plex users don’t give a toss about subtitle support. It irks me that I have to launch XBMC to download subtitle files to use with Plex since Plex almost never downloads subtitles for any of the movies and TV shows I have.

All of the subtitle support I had hoped was already available (SRT and ASS) but streaming subtitle support as mentioned in other threads would be nice.

Agreed! Would love for improved subtitle support.

+1

I still use subsmarine to be sure to have at least one subtitle for each new tv shows.

Yeah this would be much appreciated  PGS support please.

+1 PGS supported over transcoding!

I think this topic is close enough.  I use Roku,  PMC and Windows 8 metro clients.  The same is probably  true in the Android and IOS clients.  When accessing shared  media that has  subtitles saved on the shared  server please  make those  subtitles available to the client to select  just like as if the media was served locally.  I know the server owner  can choose to burn the subtitles into transcoded media, but that effects  everybody using the server and is not what I want to see..  Transcoded or not normally transcoded.  Embed subtitles as  directed my the client re  language, color, size and/or position in the video.  It seems at least  some of this can be acted  upon local LAN content now..  Please like this post if you want this feature.  Thanks!

I also get a lot of .sub -files which do not work at all. I need to convert those to .srt (using gnome subtitles) which most of the time works, but not always (getting out-of-sync, encoding etc. issues). The "funny" thing is that if I accidently select the sub-subtitle (plex does detect them) the video fails to start. So I need to deactive the subtitle manually to get the video working (or select an srt-version). Also because of the bug that you can't remove any manually added subtitles (plex caches them) the .sub-subtitles stick in there forever (unless I remove the whole video, rescan, make sure it's removed and re-add it).

Please instead of  saying unknown for country codes that are not frequently encountered, just display the country code.  Is that hard to do?  i might even invent a country code for special subtitles like those for the  deaf that include all sounds.

Usually that means the bitrate quality is too high :\ , try setting it to like 4mb or 8mb. Max Quality in my experiance only works correctly if it can direct play.

I couldn't find a thread with a quick search, so I'm posting it here: black & yellow text with VOBSUB, what's up with that? I have lot's of MP4 & VOBSUB videos, and they all play nicely but the text has yellow outlines with black on the inside. VLC can play them in nice white, so It's definitely a player issue. Replicates with iOS and web.

the real color of those vobsubs is likely yellow.. like you see on plex.. but VLC most likely changes it because it is ugly.

You might be able to change it while viewing on PHT... but I don't think server has support.
