Hi, can you please strongly consider enabling me to stop the Plex Relay feature. As a paid up Plex Pass holder I’m deeply disappointed that you would add a feature that negatively impacts the security of my network without letting me turn it off!
Sure I could have my router firewall stop Plex getting out but I have other things that would also impact. It’s a great feature but not one I want and I will have to take steps I don’t want to take to secure myself because of it. Much as I love Plex my security is more important.
I have crippled this feature by changing the name of the directory in the Plex files so that when then related commands try to run they are not found. This is a workaround at best but it offers something.
I still believe that we, as owners and customers, need to be in control of this feature. If I choose not to set up remote access then Plex Media Server should not go against my wishes and tunnel out regardless. It makes the choice to not set up remote access pointless.
if remote access is disabled - then relay is disabled. how are you determining that is enabled? what version of server are you running?
Was the fix / change covered in release notes? My apologies if it was as I did read them but must have skimmed over it - which is embarrassing. I’m not up to date but when the release notes didn’t seem to cover it and i couldnt find advice on other forum posts about the issue then I didn’t upgrade because I was considering downgrading.
I’m determining relay is working by connecting to my Plex server from off network through a totally external channel. I will upgrade tomorrow and check it fixes the issue.
I updated to the most recent version and this does indeed appear to be fixed. Was it mentioned in release notes somewhere?
I would like to see the option to disable the relay feature. It may be nice for many but for those of us that want more granular control over the network traffic this is a big problem as it circumvents firewall rules. The only workaround I’ve seen posted is to rename/delete PlexRelay.exe which is less than ideal.
It looks like this feature was just added in 1.18.5.2309:
(Networking) Added prefrence to allow disabling of the relay (#8514)
