Maybe my first post. Can’t believe how old this thread is and how many people want this.
For me its for directors cuts etc. Wouldn’t be so bad if we could label our alt versions instead of just seeing their bit rate.

There is a clunky work around with the split item feature. You can custom name each of the split items to reflect which cut they are attached to.
How has Emby been able to figure this out and has had it working flawlessly for quite awhile, and Plex is stumped on how to implement it? Crazy!
Because they’re ok with the simple approach. The complicated approach (making sure durations match each version) that was described earlier doesn’t work on all apps in Emby, although it does work on their Android TV app.
@elan From your point of view. Can you help us to better understand why considering a simple approach without different UUIDs is something that could not be taken into account? I think at least for right now it would solve a lot of the frustation that people are expressing.
+1 Pleaseeeeee…
You know you want to…
How difficult would it be to change what is displayed in the Play Version pop-up window to add some more information. Even the filename would do, or a label etc. Kinda annoying having to split movies apart then have 5 copies of movies show in the list.
I am finding an increasing need for this.
It would also be nice to control the default version that gets played when there are multiple files if there’s no ability to select one.
Finally, it would be nice to easily see which movies had multiple versions… like, maybe a little number in the corner… like it used to be… DOH!
What if a server admin didn’t care about stuff like this, as long as there was a clear way to launch the desired version?
Like, if the file count for a movie was greater than 1 in its folder, upon hitting Play it would launch a secondary window that you could use to select the desired version. It could pull metadata from those fields from the file name (minus the extension):
Nirvana Unplugged In New York (1993) [Original Version]
Nirvana Unplugged In New York (1993) [Unedited Version]
You might want to give Emby a try. I think every indication is that this isn’t going to be resolved anytime soon. Here’s a pic of Emby for my Harley Quinn - Birds of Prey movie. Anything I want called out I just put in brackets like you did above and it shows up as a version that’s easily selected.
I actually have Emby, but don’t use it as much, if at all because their client interfaces haven’t been as polished as Plex. I’ll take another look, because what you’ve got there looks pretty.
EDIT: Well, looky there! Exactly the functionality I’d expect!!!
I tend to agree, but I’ve gotten used to it, and the functionality is so much more flexible.
Glad to hear it! And so much easier when you’ve already got it setup. ![]()
Thanks for showing how it works with Emby. I always have a little hope that me might get some news when I see that there is a new answer in this thread but each time there is less hope left.
A post was split to a new topic: Use logo instead of (textual) title
Come on Plex! It’s been 9 years!
+1 for the request.
Now that the DSNY+ select marvel movies are in IMAX I want the 1080p IMAX version and 4K but make it easier for people to see the difference
I just set up the alternate versions as an Other version in an Other folder. Name it something meaningful like “Dir Cut” or “Special Edition” and I can play them if I want. They show up at the bottom after Trailers and Behind the Scenes. 99% of the time I never play anything other than my prefered version anyway so there is no point to do more than that.
How is that still not handled properly by Plex???
So something hidden away after all the trailers and behind the scenes clips, tried that and hated it
As they say, different strokes. I hardly ever play the alternate versions. My product suggestion was to allow folder names for things like “Alternate Versions” and have them come first in line before the trailers.
