Add playlists that are not dependent on iTunes please!
Oh my. I was going on a longer train ride (2 hours each direction) today and quickly wanted to add that nice new album to my iPad that I got recently. Quickly started that awesome Plex app, tapped the Sync button and after just 30 seconds I was ready to go. Way more convenient than using iTunes to sync my stuff to the iPad I must say (for video it’s not even a competition). On the train I started listening to it and it was working great. The only thing I was missing right there was playlist support, I mean the ability to create and edit them from the iPad. If that would then just sync back to PMS and was available from PHT hooked up to my stereo, even better. With this added, I can see myself dumping the iPod (music) app on my iPad and iTunes on my PC altogether and completely replace it with an all Plex solution! Once there is multi-user mode (which I have to assume is coming soon), you could even start to share those Playlists with friends and family.
FFS, I’ve been using Plex for a pretty long time now and this has to be one of the, if not the, most frequently asked about topics. Has there ever been any dev comment on playlists? I simply don’t understand why this hasn’t been done. If Plex had playlists it could easily be the only media system for my entire household. I’d happily donate $100 if I knew it’d help/go to getting playlists in Plex.
+1 for musics
and for Series/films !
I’d love a playlist system for video. I want to make a giant best of Simpsons playlist and then even be able to shuffle episodes. Put like 50 episodes in and have it randomly play one would be awesome.
+1
This would be fantastic, and filters would make it even better. For example, pick a random TV show where state = watched (to have something playing while going to sleep). A sleep timer would also be fantastic. Play this playlist for X hours and then stop.
Agree it could be great for video also!
Yay, playlists are now a “Popular” request.
The problem is that this playlist thread has 50 votes.
This one has 16 votes.
And this one has 6 votes.
Is it possible that a mod merges them?
I am not sure if this is necessary, I know I've been waiting for playlists to become popular and I have voted on all three of these issues, I think this one getting popular is good enough.
I would also like to throw in my two cents, I think the key to this would be to have programmable playlists, sort of like psudotv's channels. I would personally love this for my children's content so I could just let it play. I also like the idea of creating channels, I see it as a way watch more of my content I already have, I love watching old episodes of my shows but I find that when I go to pick I always want to start at the beginning and watch all of them through. I would rather something that would take some parameters and create an ongoing stream of shows, like I would like a channel with half hour comedy's I have already watched or something like that. I really like the look of psudotv and how you can "program" the channels, but I would just be happy with smart playlists that I can set to random play as long as there is some way to set them up. I think this could be a great use of the plexWeb where you create the playlists there and then you can see them on all of the clients. I would also love a guide like interface then I might be able to convince my wife to give up cable but that's not really part of this feature request.
@jonathanderry Yes. Somebody else wants a customizable playlist for content that has been watched previously.
+1, at least for music
I’m using iTunes channel specifically for my playlists, but I’d really like to see some kind of shuffle feature.
Just want to clarify a couple of aspects of this feature request:
The Playlist idea overlaps those of Collections and Queue (as in the “cue” internal to the Plex Client player, not just the collection of internet clips in the Plexcloud).
Why not combine the best elements of each? That is, make Playlists persistent (like Collections) and make Collections global to Sections (like Next Up/Queue), all accessible from the Main Menu (like Sections, Channels etc).
This would orientate the system UI towards the “minifestival movie program” model. For example, one could then line up (“program”) a whole evening’s entertainment, say around a film director. Picture it if youse will: alongside a “double feature”, you’d have a couple of docu’s, interviews, cloud-Queue webclips, OSTs, and tastefully dispersed musical interludes to enable trips to the fridge, or outside with the Labs (sorry Barkely) to widdle on the lawn under cover of darkness.
I’m suggesting this because it’s what I end up doing each evening, setting it up as far as Plex presently allows it.
Perhaps this post should be bumped out into another thread; nevertheless it’s relevant to Playlist as well. I hope you can factor this into your interface planning, both for the Media Manager AND the Client Player (another major overlap…):);):0
I would love to see a video playlist feature. A way to save queues, at the very least. (I don’t use Plex for music at this point, but if I did I’d definitely want the functionality for music as well.)
I’ve been putting music videos and fanvids (fan made music videos for movies, TV shows, etc.) into Plex and there are definitely times I’ve queued up a bunch and then wished I could save that particular playlist.
At Christmas time, would’ve been lovely to have a playlist of Christmas music videos possibly interspersed with holiday specials and/or favorite holiday episodes of TV shows and/or holiday movies.
Plenty of times I’ve found myself putting things in the queue and then wishing I could save that for later use.
+1 for this!
I’d like to see playlists, smart playlists, I’d also like to see “auto” playlists with lists starting from a certain track and a list of similar songs being built out of metadata/last.fm similar artists, or even the analyzed music information itself.
+1 for this as well. The ability to create and play even a basic playlist would be a huge step forward. Also, as someone has mentioned above, has a developer ever commented on this issue? I’d love to read what their thinking is.
Please count me in as a BIG YES for playlists… both Music and Video … I can’t see any downside.
I do not understand where the playlist is the difficulty. A developer can provide information on the subject to give.
I don’t think that the issue is difficulty but of priority, at the moment there are much more popular issues that will take more development time. If we really want this feature we have to prove that it is something that is desired by the majority of users of plex, so comment on this issue and vote on this issue and make it a priority.
+1
+1 for Music and Films/Videos.
