[Implemented] Please add Google Chromecast!

I would pay so much money for this feature.

+1 here as well

Its not  35 bucks if you already pay for Netflix. then is 11 bucks since netflix gives you three months free.

It will stream a tab within Chrome, so the web plex is already ready to go theoretically. I've been looking to see how the phone/tablet is accomplished.

The Washington Post apparently is already all over the API/SDK and is releasing a new channel optimized for the device.

he chrome tab streaming extention is out, https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/google-cast/boadgeojelhgndaghljhdicfkmllpafd

Could have mild success to stream the webplex to the device out of the box as I mentioned, although there is some delay it appears and may not be 100%, later version of Chrome (30) should have improvements.

Just my 2 cents.

I'm hoping for something a bit more comprehensive like the youtube or netflix app. That would hopefully keep the lag of browser streaming away.

I wonder what will be the performance of this little amazing device as a PLEX client. + 1 for support.

I haven't like the fact that the PLEX Team has stripped out the keyboard shortcuts from XBMC for other reasons but this is a HUGE reason to put them back.

Being able to turn subtitles on or off, big or small skips in either direction of a video, choosing language, aspect ratio, etc are sorely missed transitioning from XBMC to PLEX.

Now that we will be able to send the PLEX Web client to the TV any small device or PC off to the side running a chrome browser could be our main PLEX Client.

Map keyboard shortcuts to a remote and man what a great cheap PLEX Client.

isn't all that already possible with Rasbperri Pi ?!? O_o

And then u have the real PHT. Not the Web version. Which is good. But not really for TVs, or ?!

The thing about Rasberry PI is it cost more then 35 dollars by the time your done with it you might has well as brought a google tv or HTPC with the time and money you have to put into it with this chromcast plug and play is all you have to do. Now while me and you might want to fiddle around I know my parents and family just want somthing that works and this could be the soultion. +1 for PlexCast

yes?!? this Forum is Plex... ?!? Plex needs a Server, u get it.

and again, it's all possible with Rasbperri Pi ....

if u want Chromecast because you dont want to use Plex, have fun. but buying chromecast for Plex/Web ?!? its stupid

Ok one yes this is A plex forum and what does it needing a server has to do with anyting and Yes I know all about Resplex My point is you need to build any type of rasbarry machine.

when you buy chrome cast All you have to do is plug it in and thats all how is that Stupid. If chromecast is ment for streaming videos and A plexServer stream videos to plex clients why can't chrome cast be a plex client? How is that stupid? You are not making any sense.

I guess we learned using any other PLEX client other than rasplex is "stupid".

Are all the other feature request threads trolled as well. :(

I don’t think you understand what chromecast is.

okay, maybe stupid was the wrong word, sorry.

lets say i think "its a not so good idea" to buy a device for 30$, which is the price of Rasbperri Pi to run Web/Plex. If there where be a possible to run PHT on chromecast, its great!

because Plex/Web is great, But not for TVs. Then u better could use a Rasbperri Pi for the same price with better performance (than web/plex). .... and its already possible.

Reading further on how the Chromecast works, its remotely controlled but has its own Apps (the video plays from the internet to the Chromecast, the initial device is not needed to continue or alter playback), which is why currently content is limited to Google Play, YouTube, Netflix, and the Chrome Tab (Beta), they are the only ChromeCast apps developed for Day 1. Essentially a PlexCast client could be an app similar to the mobile apps. It would facilitate selecting your content from a remote device, then continue playback independently through the ChromeCast.

I saw the Google Play site was sold out at one point, I got mine ordered, now the study..

API   https://developers.google.com/cast/

Sample Apps  https://github.com/googlecast

"Google promises that adding Google Cast support to existing applications can in many cases take less than 200 lines of code."

Steps

1. ChromeCast.ordered

2. immediately start hoping that Plex will support gCast for local media

3. +1 this request

4. Download beta PMS tomorrow  ;)

we don't want it to run Plex/Web.  This thread is a feature request thread, and we are requesting that official support for Chromecast be added to Plex Server.  Then, from my phone, I tell the chromecast to play a video, and it hooks up with the server and plays the video on its own.  My phone (or web browser or ipad, ect) just instructs the chromecast what to do.

Now...the chromecast can mimic a browser screen in real time (so we could watch a plex/web video over the chromecast, but that is not the functionality that we are requesting in this thread.

I'm really hopeful that this is going to be possible.  I already ordered mine.

As far as the chromecast will know, your server is in the "cloud" since its accessed with an IP address.  No matter that its a local IP.  Should still work.  Having said that, I know a lot of coding has to be done by the fine folks at PLEX, and I am sure that they will add this functionality of possible.  I am pre-thanking them for all there hard work...Thanks PLEX folks!

The thing is Rasbery Pi does not just cost 35 dollars yes the board cost 35 dollars but you also need 15 dollars to power it another 15 dollars for a case the time to put it all together and get it working. Its way more then just 35 dollars if the plex team can make this run as a client this would be much more efficient for normal users.

By this logic, any client (as opposed to a full server installation) would be stupid.  There is a lot to be said about a wide user base (Roku) and a relatively open architecture (not Apple) on which a Plex client sits.  You want it popular enough and locked down enough to offer other streams (Netflix, Amazon, etc.) but also capable of playing most content without heavy transcoding.

I like the idea of Chromecast, but Google has a spotty history with media formats.  From a technical standpoint, the Raspberry Pi is exciting, but any media center based on it will always be on the fringe and will likely never carry any of the other (DRM-requiring) streams.

So let's keep a bit of perspective here.
