[Implemented] Server-Side Speed Limits/Caps for Shared/Subscribed Users

If the defacto media for the major of our ISPs was fiber, I’d say this is a pointless request.

Because the vast majority of us are forced into cable internet (High download, low upload) this causes “green” users to not realized that their “internet speed” is limited by the remote server when utilizing Plex; i.e. large corporations that provide streaming services have more bandwidth to upload than “bob” could ever consume.

Bob is bewildered when told by a PlexPass account user, “Dude, you’re killing me by streaming 1080P all the time, could you lower that?” Bob doesn’t realized how networks work, so he assumes “it must be something dumb with Plex.”

Not empowering PlexPass users to prevent Bob from “shooting himself in the foot” negatively impacts the brand which is Plex.

+1 FOR SURE

Great Idea. I need this Feature! I have 8 Friends and i can´t Controll them every time.

Yes…

+1, maybe per user and over all uplink

+1

Alternatively the option to set the limit client side. For instance, I have physical access to a client and would like to manually limit that client’s streaming quality across the board to 1.5 mbps

You can already do this on the client. Settings>Video>Quality over WiFi or Quality over Mobile.

This seems like an ancient request that never gets addressed… :-/

+1 for being able to limit bandwidth on the server. I’m not sure why there is so much confusion/argument over this feature. If I am running a server, then I want control over how it is used, which includes managing the bandwidth allocation for each user. Asking each user to make changes on their end is not sufficient, since they can easily change it back without my knowledge. This wouldn’t even be a problem if I was able to determine which users changed it back so I can talk to/remove their access if it happens again.

It’s obviously not a technical limitation. Software such as Emby has this functionality and has for years.

I am curious as to why this hasn’t been implemented, given it’s popularity.

Perhaps they are holding off on a bunch of the popular features for the 1.0 release which will eventually come.

Add me to this list as well. Really strange that this feature doesn’t exist.

Check out this topic, you’ll see that a Plex employee openly states that this feature is coming in “probably next” release.

Sounds great to me!

@neebski - you’re reading too much into that statement. I’m pretty sure the only behavior that person will be seeing is that his client will properly play NAS server files he already has that stopped playing correctly, will soon.

That being said - I don’t see why the same ‘limitations’ that are set based on hardware (ie, NAS ARM unable to transcode higher than 480p) could not be set in a settings menu for all clients.
That’s not all of the feature settings I want, but it’s a majority.

@JamminR you’re probably right but I can be hopeful!

It is very annoying - i used to have 20mb up but now only have 13mb up. With 3 remote clients its now important that the remotes dont use more than 4mb each. However at say 2am when no one else is on, one of them ups it to 12mb for better quality. However they dont put it back and the next day again have to get ahold of them to change it back down.

YES +1. yes

Great feature! Hope to see it soon!

+1… a no-brainer imo

+1 for me!

+1 - important for streaming with friends
