+1. Looking forward to sharing with friends, can’t do it now
The user management settings needs a more robust set of options overall. Limiting global speed, per user speed, number of connections, number of simultaneous connections per user, etc…

Agreed!
In addition to just a bandwidth limit per user, there should also be a transcode setting as well, something like a dropdown with 3 options:
Normal (Allow Transcoding)
Direct Stream Only
Direct Play Only
Sure, sometimes certain things wouldn’t play, but at least then it wouldn’t take down 2 other people’s connection because one person is trying to transcode a 1080p movie while another 1080p video is already transcoding.
I really can’t believe the user section hasn’t been enhanced to add this and the other features in this thread. It’s one of the single biggest problems with Plex and has been for years.

I use a QOS enabled router to handle this and limit outgoing bandwidth per connection. The client can request as much data as they want, but they’re only getting “X” bandwidth from me. Buy a Tomato or ***-WRT firmware flashable router if you feel comfortable with advanced settings. (limit by IP, set different speed levels per IP and more)Takes the overhead off the server and puts it on hardware built to handle that.
But… I would love for this to just be a setting in PMS. Definitely +1’d it.
How would you limit by IP? Your PMS has only one IP and it will remain the same. If you mean the remote users’ ip’s, then theirs will be dynamic and will keep changing most of the time.
@Phatbox I started using QoS also. Works great because I can add all my
leaches and heavy bandwidth hog’s to that bucket. They have sorted out on
their own how to change the quality settings (even after repeated requests
to do so). I use a Ubiquiti Edge Router, love it.
@rock7632 IP’s don’t change that often, I use PlexPy so I can monitor new
connections.
This is long over due, some Plex alternatives already have this feature.

What alternative?
I would love to demo it.
The leading competitor for example which is Emby.
Won’t be renewing my plex pass next time it comes up. Have pretty much seen how the Plex devs handle feature requests, which is to say, not at all. There have been plenty of posts on this since 2013 when this topic was created.
I’ve been waiting for this feature since I first noticed this post. I would really like to see some implementation soon. I only share my library with a couple of friends but one is pretty far away and not very good with anything computer related. Trying to explain how to go into the settings and change the remote bandwidth setting isn’t happening. If I could just force all their streams to a lower quality life would be good.

i would like to see this as well. currently i use QoS to enforce this which doesn’t work very well at all. Let’s assume i restrict my outbound to an ip to 4Mbps and they set their end to 10Mbps it just causes playback issues for them until everything smooths out. So for the first couple minutes I’m sending half the data to the bitbucket are they’re just getting artifacts like crazy… Enforcing a limit on their user account would accomplish this properly.
I’d really love to see multicast but that’s a different feature request (and i can just kick it out multicast using my vBrick)

If the clients supported adaptive bitrates (true or just down switching) and remembered the last setting used (to start the next session), then QOS would work a whole lot better.

This is a must. I thought that WEB settings controlled this. I seen today that is not the case when I moved from Windows to Linux. I was talking to one of my users and he thought the same thing on his server. Now that I know this, I can see why I have been having issues with my upload speeds.
Please add this feature.

+1 This really needs to get in asap
I vote for this as well, it is not just needed but required.
this would be a life saver feature!!! PLEASE DEVS CREATE THIS FOR US!!! I’m a lifetime plexpass customer!
This would be nice. Actually, I’d be happy if I could at least SEE what quality setting is being used. If you click Info on a user’s stream in Now Playing, that information should be there.
