And now we wait and beg Plex to listen to their customers and act on it, something they seem to have great difficulty in doing.
Who do you think develops ExoPlayer?

Who do you think develops Plex apps?
The Plex development process is powered by votes. The more âbitsâ you add, via votes, the faster the app is developed.
Exoplayer 2.12.0 officially released yesterday.
Can we please get Plex android and fire tv apps upgraded and these core issues fixed?
These, together with other ssa/ass-related fixes are crucial, especially since v8 of Android app. Now video can be transcoded, but ssa/ass subs are passed through as-is, because target should render them by itself. In theory this is great news, but subtitles are not rendered correctly if theyâre complex enough. For example, support for positioning in SSA subtitles was only added in the latest version, which is 2.12.
There is a post in another thread which states that these fixes has basically nothing to do with Plex which is just untrue⊠Plex does not implement any fixes for these particular issues and this forum plagued with requests to fix exactly these issues is all the proof needed. Seeing a lot of these fixed in upstream and us not getting the fixes is frustrating, frankly.
Had to resort to setting âburn-in subtitlesâ to âalwaysâ which is clearly sub-optimal.
But it should, shouldnât it?
Anyway, I sincerely hope that ExoPlayer gets updated soon.
+1 This is great chance to decide SSA and DV request!
Dolby Vision in mkv is unrelated to this feature request
That is an absolute copout and you know it. I am starting to see what people are saying now when they say that Plex has become a pile of garbage and that the developers could care less about those of us that have paid them with OUR HARD EARNED MONEY! Embyâs starting to look better an better. The player you use is outdated but you all seem to, again, care less.
I donât see whatâs a copout there. There is no perfect player, and all have their issue or challenges
Not entirely true, Windows Media Center!!! . Jk agreed

Coming up to 2 weeks and nothing so far. And as usual, no helpful meaningful decent post from plex either.
Iâm not sure how fast you think this can be done, but Exoplayer is not just a dependency that is dropped into the Plex app for a quick update.
Also not sure what you think will be solved. Unless the specific error is with the playback engine that is solved with the update, there isnât much you would notice with the Plex app. Updating Exoplayer will not magically make things work.
Edit - to provide some background, when Exoplayer updated from v1 to v2, it took the team about 6 months to get the app working with v2.
Thank you for the insight.
But you know that your example is a misleading one.
v1 vs v2 ⊠two totally different peaces of software.
I donât want to join a battle over updating v2 of the Exoplayer here,
but the more minor upgrades and bug fixes the dev team is missing to include, the longer it will take them to catch up once they do.
I agree that probably a good number of new features will not do any difference from within the Plex players.
Maybe you want to go through a number of feature/fix candidates that look promising for OP and company?
As far as I am concerned, I have a long list of wishes for subtitles - and from time to time, I see fixes and extended support for some of these wishes in the exoplayer release notes. Plus, whenever seeing a better handling of a certain container in the rl notes, I have the naive thought of âoh, that might help one or another userâ. In general, v2 of exoplayer gets more and more robust and tolerant to malformed video or audio. Not knowing about the technical backgrounds of why my FireTV players tend to crash regularly, I welcome any of these changes, too. Might not help with my crashes at all (because Plex code is probably as prone to error as the amazon or google code). Where I was socialized, it is generally considered a good thing to have only 25 player crashes per month instead of 27.
Whatever you think of it, I agree that there should be regular updates of underlying code like exoplayer. Somebody mentioned already that these things are done on a regular basis and for the moment, I do have the feeling that some have different thoughts coming to their mind what could be a good time period when thinking of a âregular time intervalâ.
For myself, I appreciate your efforts in creating a stable player environment and while there is truly nothing like a perfect player out there⊠I think that making the very best of your choice of going with exoplayer should always stay one core attribute of your efforts.
No hard feelings on my side. Cheers
Sure, but itâs still not just pull the latest Exoplayer from Google and be done.
Lots of underlying fixes to the playback engine have already been included without updating Exoplayer as a whole. This is one of the advantages when the app switched to v2.
If there are specific issues youâve identified, those may be fixable without needing to update Exoplayer. And just updating Exoplayer does not necessarily mean the issue will be fixed for Plex.
Keep in mind that Amazon has their own fork of Exoplayer, so they need to update themselves first.
Is the crash just the Plex app or the entire device? App crashes are usually fixable. Device crashes are another story.
Sure, when itâs needed. The effort to constantly update Exoplayer doesnât outway the benefits, especially when most changes donât affect Plex.
No problem. Polite conversations/discussions are always welcomed. But if you reply âso this will be done in 2 weeks?â, Iâm going to smack you.
What if everybody pitches in and tries coding just a little bit faster, and really gives 110%?
Sure, which part do you want?
Iâll bring snacks and drinks.

âshallow pan of foodâ is the most ridiculous emoji.
If there is something specific in the latest Exoplayer that is wanted, it would probably be easier to make a request for that specific change. A generic âupdate Exoplayerâ doesnât mean much.
As has been said before, some of the updates in Exoplayer will have no impact on the Plex app.
Making never ending excuses and allowances for them improves nothing for anyone.
There are tons of improvements between the exoplayer they have embedded into their version from near a year ago till now. The issue here is them actually updating their plex app to incorporate the latest version of exoplayer as they clearly couldnât be bothered all these years to bring those fixes themselves eg subtitle support, dolby vision and so on. Instead NOW we hear more excuses like oh butttt we donât use exoplayer for dolby vision and that depends on FFmpeg (which in that thread wasnât conveniently said until AFTER latest exoplayer came out).
And subtitle? Meh couldnât be bothered for years. It is just one excuse after another or radio silence for years with no resolution or solid effort put in to fix the core issues. Want to see what they can do when they put their mind to it? Look at how quickly they brought out VOD+ads and how its rapidly expanding inc languages but its core offerings? Nope. Compare that to its competitors like Emby, Jellyfish and others, and you would see how active they are and how quickly they improve their offerings and fix issues and meaningfully engage their community.
We all want Plex to improve and we want its core offering, which is what people have thus far signed up and paid for, to ACTIVELY improve. It certainly has the resources to do so and no one is being unreasonable.
FFmpeg was mentioned months ago, much earlier than the 2.12.0 release of ExoPlayer.
Please stop spreading misinformation, or assuming that no changes are happening because you donât see a big version bump.
