Import meta comment to description

When adding media that can’t get data from an agent, Plex gets data from the files metadata instead, like title, date and thumbnail, but it doesn’t get any description.

Could Plex get the description from the meta comment in the file?

If you use mp4/m4v files, it is working that way.

I am using mp4 files and it hasn’t automatically imported the comment to the description.

Is there a setting or something for that?

You need to have the Local Media Assets agent activated.
Depending on which meta data agent is selected as default for the library, you will find the checkbox under
Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - Plex Movie/TheMoviedatabase/Personal Media

(The field is named in my metadata editor as PODCASTDESC.)

In the case of tv shows, you can only get a description about the episode, but not about the show in general.

Yep. I knew all of that. Except that there was a field called “podcastdesc” or that that is what Plex uses for the description instead of the seemingly more common “comment” field. None of my searches managed to turn up that information. Thanks.

PODCASTDESC might be a name which my particular tag editor uses.
Here are some more infos about which meta tags are usable What MP4 tags can be read into Plex with local assets agent?

No that is the name of the field.

OK, then how about this: A ‘comment’ is not the same as a ‘description’.
Plex will rather show a description than a comment.

Early 2021 clean-up: implemented (assuming data is in the right metadata tag)
