Like so many others I’m patiently waiting for audiobook support. Until then I’ll continue to manually enter everything myself, I find that to be the only workaround that works all the time every time.
There is however one thing that I wish could be automated. When I create my audiobooks I add the book description to the “comment” metadata, just like “they” says I should do.
But Plex doesn’t understand this and shows nothing in the album description (my library is set as a music library). Is there a way to make plex understand where to get the description or must I continue to manually add it?
The thing is that both the program I use to create the books and edit the metadata of existing files didn’t have a description tag. Instead the had the comment tag which according to people on the internet is where I should put the book info.
I downloaded another program which had the description tag, even if it was hidden at first.
I guess I’ll have to change my workflow a bit. Good thing I don’t have that many audiobooks yet.
Okay, Kid3 maps their “Description” tag to the ID3 specification’s TIT3, or Title3 tag. Per the ID3 spec, this tag is supposed to be for:
The ‘Subtitle/Description refinement’ frame is used for information
directly related to the contents title (e.g. “Op. 16” or “Performed
live at Wembley”).
So I don’t think it’s intended for the comments about the book that you’re looking for.
But the other problem is that Plex currently does not import the TIT3 tag at all, so it wouldn’t solve your issue anyway. It is one of several tags that we are hoping will be added.
Well you can argue that TIT3 “Subtitle/Description” is in fact the correct field where a (short) description of the contents should go.
But indeed, Plex doesn’t import this field so it’s a moot point. Very few other music players read/use that tag either.
Plex at this point simply does not have a way to import comments, descriptions etc from embedded tags, you have to add it in the WebUI manually as an “album review” and it will be stored in the Plex database only, not in the file tags.
