in a nuttshell: which synology NAS choose for plex transcoding at 1080p?

Hi all,

I’m evaluating to buy a Synology nas and I’d like to be sure it will work perfectly with 1080p transcoding too.

I’d love to go for a 2bay option but 4bay cab ne good as well.

Which should I get to avoid troubles when I try to relax in from of TV? if you can give me both samples for 2 and 4 bay will be more than appreciated!

Thanks

I invite you to search here in the Synology forum. Many have asked and thoroughly discussed this question.

Well, I have had a 4 bay synology ds411+ii but outgrew its 4bay 16 gig capacity. Upgraded to the 918+ 4 bay that, unlike my old nas, can transcode. I have 4 8 gig drives (shucked from wd easystore containing nas red drives) and it is functioning perfectly as both data container and plex media server. If you anticipate growth in your media storage needs, the synology 918+ is perfect. Another reason I went with the synology was the ease of migration from my older nas and the ease of DSM usage. To get transcode capability you must be a plex pass subscriber.

thank you trumpy81! this is right where my mind is at. where is the place to discuss the essential “918+ vs qnap 453b” details? I’m new here, so pardon the question.

The j3455 processor appears to nail the core requirements for me. a sweet spot of capabilities and price. I just can’t decide what name should be on the front panel!

if only qnap would give the same level of support as they do to plex labs i would be sold in an instant. I’m even an former Unix system administrator so command lines don’t intimidate me. so far on the sales side I’m liking qnap as well, even though I am a current synology owner (211j).
