This happens on all of my Android TV devices. Shield, HiSense H8G, and Tivo Stream 4k. I’d say 1 in 5 times a try to start a direct play video it will work. I can usually get it to work by stopping and start the video a few times if the spinning circles lasts more than a few seconds. Resuming works just as poorly. This is with every file. Doesn’t matter if it’s H.265, H.264, DD, DTS, TrueHD, DTS-HD MA, Atmos, etc.
This has been going on for months, over the course of numerous updates and hasn’t gotten any better. Looks like some users have been having issues linger than that.
I get the same issue for Months now … it is really frustrating paying for a plexpass, having one of the best android TV device (Shield) and they do not figure it out.
Playing through an old 2016 Tizen TV, it is working, playing on smartphone, tablet is working. But on shield even a 1080p is sometimes hanging …
As the other people no matter if direct play, transcode, etc sometimes working well, sometimes hanging.
I have tried hte Arm7 version for my shield TV 2019
The situation seems to be a lot better. I’m testing several 4K movies I’m now able to play in direct stream. This is working for AC3 5.1, DTS, DTS MA, BUT still hangs for TrueHD and True HD Atmos ! The 2 last ones are not working
Since the latest update, I have not had any issues on either my Shield or Chromecast 4K devices. I’ve had other users tell me their Firesticks are working again as well. When my family and friends are happy and streaming, I am happy. Thank you to all the dev’s working on this. I know it’s a tiring job with little reward most of the time (from one coder to another).
I’m sorry it has just been hard to reproduce ourselves and figure out. Have you tried the releases linked a couple of posts above. Would you mind sharing recent app logs with one of those versions
Installed the Arm64 version above and initial test is worse than the previous version.
Just restarting Shield to try again.
Nope still worse.
Interestingly this version doesn’t seem to load any buffer. At least I cannot see any buffering on the playback bar for the file.
Edit: tried again and now it’s buffering. Seems very random. Playback OK at the moment. 20 mins in with buffering keeping up and playback remaining fine.
All I know is that my system worked fine a few months ago, and has recently become very unstable.
Playback with the plex client on the LG tv still seems to be fine (but missing atmos, unlike the shield).
Tried 2 other videos which have so far required trying a few times to start playback, but when started have been fine. This is with the Arm64 apk listed above.
If you are referring to crash data it is sent to us but only when there is a app crash afaik. if you mean playback data Opt In as described in our privacy policy then that is all generalized and anonymous so we would not be able to get specifics to any users particular playback events.
You are welcome to message me the logs by clicking on my username/avatar and clicking on message button if you are concerned about posting them publicly here.
When you need to retrieve logs from your Android TV or Amazon Fire TV device, you can do so by turning on logging, reproducing the issue, then retrieving the logs.
Reproduce the Issue and Grab Logs
When you enable network logging in the Android TV app, you’ll be able to access device logs over your local network for the next 20 minutes. You’ll need to grab your app logs right after reproducing the issue. To do so:
Reproduce the issue you’re experiencing
In the app, go to Settings > Advanced > Network Logging and turn ON the setting
In a web browser on another device/computer, go to http://[IPofAndroidDevice]:32500/logging (the exact URL to use will be displayed at the bottom right of the screen)
Save the browser page as a text file or copy-paste it into a text file and save
