Guess we will see. Can anyone confirm the addsite trick still works if your disconnect your internet then install a prev .shsh? I have a working atv that hasnt recived apple’s backdoor update. I will try to see what they modifed while my internet is disconnected of course
I highly doubt they will release a plexconnect app, it would be nice but I wouldnt hold your breath. I doubt they would go thru the effort to shut this down if they were just gonna open it up in 12 days.
This is why I dont update to newer ios, the more you do the more they control your device. Dont they understand the more they take away the more people they piss off, this is why we keep jailbreaking the atv and looking at the files. We will find a way in, if not we will buy a dif non apple device that will. Either way they lose money by these backdoor updates or ios software updates.
I would imagine they make far more money channelling the good citizens/consumers to iTunes content and the official apps than they would giving us cheap reprobates what we want. The profit margins on the device are pretty low, after all.
On the other hand, as I have web clients, iOS, android, roku, samsung tv's and ATV, It make me wonder, despite how beautiful plexconnect looks, why I even want to follow this road. You never know when it's going to stop working.
And, although the roku ui experience may be poor compared to ATV, the moment you after you select a movie it is the same. I can put hours in this trying to get this to work or just go with the competition.....
And, btw the roku supports myplex. I don't know if it is worth it...
Not really, sorry. I think it's just a factor of these being "extra" sites... I think the ATV fetches all the sites that it knows about, the primary (1st party apps like Apple's own apps, and 2nd party channels like Vimeo and Netflix and whatnot), then after that, it looks for the extra sites and handles all them.
Remember that this is really a developer feature, for testing new apps / channels, and not exactly meant for mass consumer use.

Yeah, it's looking like Apple's doing some kind of check at the ATV -> Apple level, and it's not showing up anymore. Disappeared from both my JB 5.2 and stock 5.3 devices overnight. :(
I don't have much time over the next couple of weeks, but have a couple wild theories. Not sure they'll pan out, as they involve stuff I didn't quite grok the first time around....

We do believe that they are not updating stuff by the backdoor though but building in options/kill switches into firmware releases that they can trigger later on at will, not too dissimilar to MSFT and their ban hammers on Xbox live for chipped consoles.
I have an ATV2 with blobs going all the way back to 4.1.1 so this might be useful to test the theory. If they had any sense they would have built this in from the beginning but they appeared to take a while to add SSL to all of the apps so we will see.
Btw we are sure that we have Apple employees using PlexConnect, and they should feel free to inbox me if they would like to confirm/share some info tidbits :P :D
If they mess with my atv’s anymore and I lose my plexconnect app etc, Im tempted to just keep my atv’s on a seperate network and one ethernet on my mac lan only and just use my atv for plexconnect only, what a joke its our device but they want to manage it. I can create a seperate ip for my mac so it can still see the net and still serve plexconnect. If thats how they wanna be no reason for my appletv to talk to apple servers anymore. Plexconnect is here to stay on my device, if not time to sell these atv’s and go roku or just build pc’s for use as plex clients. The atv is weak sauce to begin with. Its not some magical device it just streams content big deal, so sorry we made it better and gave it useful content. I can do that and much more with a pc/mac/linux box. I have people on ebay waiting in line to buy my atv2 for double my purchase price.
It seems that people get more frustrated when hopes are dashed then when there is no hope at all. From my perspective, Plexconnect still works as usual. Moving it from the trailers.app to its own would have been convenient but it doesn’t change the fact that it still works now.
I have been using for years different kinds of media players and by far since i discovered plex is the best thing that exists for playing movies. I think that apple should consider adding it to their devices because if chromecast does apple will lose. I havent tried roku but reviews says it is awfull interface. Chromecast is very cheap and i read that it might support plex
I just dumped my entire working atv using filezilla while my internet was off that had addsite enabled. Time to see how they are getting in, ive had enough of them updating things without my permission. I don’t want your hidden updates stay out of my device. If I cant figure that out I hopefully can find a way to get add site back on.

This looks important deleted. Rebooted atv still works. It will take some time but its only 1gig of data to go thru.
We can update our atv also and delete your drivers, pem files, bundles and plists for your hidden little updates. Once we find it your remote server updates will cease to exist.
I have a question, how can nitotv, xbmc, and all the rest of those apps stay on the atv without apple removing them? All we need is to get a plexconnect app into their repo and we should be set right? Addsite is cool but why not just install it from there, now that would be sweet. This is such a basic app it needs barely anything to go. Why not look into a simple version of plexclient, use it as a base and just make it a simple plexconnect app? Exverything needed for plexconnect is mainly on the pms server anyways, I would think this app would be so basic it would be childs play for the right dev. One of these nito tv apps can be stripped down then just put a settings option in it so we can point the app to pms/plexconnect idk just shooting ideas out there, wish I knew more I would do it myself.
I would assume that jailbroken apps are compiled as native packages and added as modules on the atv, whereas plexconnect is added as an additional website through a debug menu that probably leaves a significant footprint. That's probably why nito tv, etc.. all stay active. They're true apps, whereas plexconnect is installed as a "shortcut" - code wise, it's pretty easy to purge that kind of thing.
Plexconnect isn't just a shell - it painstakingly translates all the incoming XML from plex and transfers it to very specific XML that the ATV understands, while sometimes adding javascript code that is specific to the ATV.
BTW, if you have a jailbroken ATV, you can install plex on it natively as well. Though, it's buggy and you will want to reset your ATV every night, but such is life.
You should recursive search through the filesystem for the word you named your plex icon. That will give you a location where it's stored on the ATV2 and probably narrow down your search considerably.
I think I figured something out. Sorry guys but I cannot release this info to the mainstream. I get how it works now im almost positive :)
