Integration with IFTTT (If this then that)

I think it would be really interesting if Plex could trigger actions using IFTTT (http://ifttt.com), like playing a file could cause your Hue lights to dim. Or, use it to automatically stop playback at a particular time (like if you're trying to go to bed at a reasonable hour each night). Or even email you a daily record of what was watched and when. I could definitely use it!

I completely agree!

Or how about, when an RSS feed or YouTube Channels is updated, new content is automatically added to our Plex Queues.

JPer, great idea! I would like that so much!

I just bought a Hue starter pack with 3 bulbs and a Hue Bloom for my living room and was looking for these kind of features.

This would be a killer feature!

And what about a rule allowing to watch a subtitles source and refresh the metadata agent when a new subtitle is available in database for a selected movie/show

you can do that with IFTT by sending an email to your myplex address whenever the rss feed or the youtube channel is updated

I use IFTTT all the time.  Having triggers and actions for Plex would be great.  I think we need to remember that server and client actions might be a bit different here.  I see tons of opportunities for basing triggers off of starting a movie or TV show, stopping one, etc (yes, I would differentiate between the two).  I do not know that I see a lot of opportunity for actions.  Enforcing a bed time (even for adults) sounds like it would be better implemented in Parental Controls than IFTTT.

Some ideas for triggers:

  • Movie added
  • TV Show added
  • Episode added
  • Movie/Episode removed from the Plex DB
  • Movie/Episode started playing
  • Movie/Episode stopped
  • Movie/Episode marked as watched
  • Transcode session started

Some recipes that might be interesting based on those triggers

  • Change lighting when a movie starts, but not when an episode starts
  • Add a row to a Google Spreadsheet when a movie/episode is marked as watched
  • Add a row to a Google Spreadsheet when a transcoding session was needed, indicating the client and content that forced it.

This would be very cool!

I've logged in to ask for this exact feature to find it on the very top of the forum :-)

I share my server with some people and I'd like to let them know via twitter or facebook the new contents I add to the library; but reading this I've got new ideas...

Yeah with ifttt my workflow does not now include bookmarking. Just add to watch later and magically appears in queue. That is the way tech should work seamless magic. Add support

If yall want this feature. Make sure you also suggest the channel on IFTTT

Submitted to IFTTT as well. Good idea!

I use this functionality as well. Good call!

I still would love for Phillips Hue and WeMo integration.

As IFTTT has those in their supported channels, I'd imagine having Plex as a channel would bring that support...

Or are you talking about native support within plex...

For those out there with WiFi lights, such as the Hue, I use the LiFx lights (lifx.co/)... Food for thought for anyone looking to get some themselves... I liked the idea of not having a separate control box, as the LiFx lights work on a mesh network... Also they're brighter (in lumens), and come in bayonet fittings... Sorry, just a little shameless promotion...

FYI... I've also submitted to IFTTT for LiFx channel support... Do the same all who have them...

On topic though, currently I get a couple of RSS feeds coming through IFTTT posting to my Plex Queue/Watch Later list via the Plex It! email... works alright... but native IFTTT support would improve things... such as YouTube channel vids posting to Watch Later...

This can open up many possibilities. I'd like condition for "content added". This will make nice notification system when things are added to the server.

Bringing this back. I’m obsessed with IFTTT

+1 this would be easy to use

I found a solution for send video links from Tweetbot twitter app on iPad or iPhone to Plex. You can send video links to Bitly and automatically add them to "My Queue" in Plex.

First. Open an account at http://bitly.com
Second. Open an account at https://ifttt.com
Third. In Ifttt.com create a Receipt: "If Bitly then Gmail".

Parameters:

-Action: Send an email. This Action will send an email to your email address queue (Find it here: https://my.plexapp.com/queue/help)
-Subject: {{Title}}
-Body: {{LongUrl}}
-Create a Receipt

Fourth: Go to Tweetbot twitter app on iPad or iPhone. Go to the Read Later preference. Select "Bitly" as an option. Login to your account.

Fifth: Send the video link to Bitly to be automatically sent to your Plex queue email address using gmail on ifttt.

+1 for IFTTT support, that would be so awesome!
