Intel N150 Hardware Acceleration with Plex HTPC

Just bought a GMKTek G3 Plus which has an Intel N150 processor. I would prefer to run Ubuntu on the box versus the Windows 11 Pro that it came with. Because this is a newer CPU I first installed Ubuntu 24.10 Desktop, which works perfectly and sees all of the hardware. However, after installing Plex HTPC via snap (1.69.0) and launching it, it immediately became clear that hardware acceleration was not working as intended (massive stuttering, barely playable at 1080p, unusable at 4K, no HDR, etc). Quick check of the logs revealed the dreaded:

MESA: warning: Driver does not support the 0x46d4 PCI ID.
libGL error: failed to create dri screen
libGL error: failed to load driver: iris
qt,scenegraph.general: Using QRhi with backend OpenGL

I read somewhere that the snap apps include drivers bundled so I’m going to assume that the bundled driver doesn’t recognize the N150 GPU properly. Is there a way to fix this or does it require an update from Plex? Plex HTPC does work correctly with Windows 11 Pro, but again, I rather run Ubuntu and not Windows if possible.

First don’t use a xx.10 release of Ubuntu, it will only be supported till September and then you would have to upgrade to the next LTS.

Is the intent to use this as only a client? Maybe try the flatpak version.

Yes you are on the bleeding edge of newness and it may take time for Plex to catch up with drivers and cpu ID’s. The focus is on the “Plex Experience Preview” for mobile launch not sure how many resources will be looking at the existing clients in the short term.

I’m aware that the .10 release is only supported until September. I don’t care about upgrading the system. The reason for the usage is because the present LTS doesn’t support the hardware with the 6.8 kernel. Support for the N150 was added in the 6.11 kernel, which presently is only available with 24.10. From what I hear, the upcoming 24.04.2 LTS will have the 6.11 kernel as well. But until then, 24.10 will do.

Yes, the intent on this is purely for a client. Considering that Plex just released 1.69.0 a few days ago shows that they are working on client releases, but I do get the point that they are also working on their Preview. Still, this should be something that should be able to be easily fixed.

I will try the flatpak version, but I would think that would result in the same situation. I’ll give it a shot though and see if it provides different results.

Does not work with the flatpak version either, fyi.

I think I remember reading someone else on the forum stating 24.10 did not work so they went back to 24.04LTS and it did work with the N150. You might search the forum.

Thanks, but that was the N100. There is someone else with the N150 that had to go to 24.10 as well to get plex server to work, which does appear to work just fine. But the plex clients aren’t working yet. I ultimately went with the N150 because it was on sale for the holidays. However, hindsight the N100 would have been a better choice for immediate satisfaction. May just have to run Win 11 and wait a few weeks until support catches up.
