Intel NUC 4k transcode

Hi there,

I’m thinking of getting a Intel NUC NUC10i5FNH kit for running PMS.
It has a i5-10210U CPU and a Intel® UHD Graphics GPU. Which will have an external 2tb disk now and might be upgraded later to have a DAS connected via USB or Thunderbolt later.

Do you think I can run 4 simultaneous 4k transcoding sessions with these specs?
And is it better to run Ubuntu or Windows when it comes to PMS with transcoding?

All other tips are welcome too

Thanks!

  1. Use the OS you have the most understanding of. Linux carries a steep and heavy learning curve. We support using Linux with PMS but are not equipped to teach Linux.

  2. You can do just as well with the -8xxx processors as you can the -10xxx processors

  3. I would invest in an i7 before the -10xxx for handling subtitles and audio. I have NUC8-i7HVK.

Good to know!
The NUC8-i7HVK is a bit to much for my budget but maybe ill go for the NUC10i7FNH.

Thanks for your help :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

The emphasis here is on the ASIC (QSV processor).

The -8xxx series CPUs have more than enough capability & quality for anything we need.

Is there a “NUC8i7-FNH” equivalent?

No not there.

But I see that one of the big differences is the GPU:
Intel UHD 620 (the two NUC’s I’m looking at have this GPU)
Intel Iris Plus Graphics 650
AMD Radeon RX Vega M 870 (Your NUC has this GPU)

Although I’m not sure if the GPU or the CPU does the transcoding.
