I’d like to get some more information about Intel Quicksync and how it works. Currently trying to decide between the new Intel NUC 10 and the older Intel NUC 8 as my next Plex server.
The new Intel NUC 10 has the i7-10710U processor which is faster than the NUC 8’s processor. But has significantly a significantly slower graphics chip, the UHD 620. While the NUC 8 has the Intel Iris Plus 655.
My question is, does Intel Quiksync run on the graphics part of the processor chip, or will the new i7-10710U indeed be faster.
QuickSync has no realistic limit on HW transcoding. I’ve done as many as 8 1080p transcodes on a J5005.
QuickSync also works well under Linux and I am unsure of the state of Radeon transcoding in the NUC8.
It also has a passmark of over 12000 and even without QuickSync you could transcode up to 6 1080P videos without using HW transcoding if you didn’t want.
It’s about as fast as a full-fledged I5-8400. Stick a 256GB Samsung NVME for transcoding and a 1TB SSD and you’re GTG. Hook it up to your NAS and go to town.
@ 1080 there may not be much limits, but if any 4k transcoding is involved, there very well could be.
don’t make the mistake of assuming 4k transcodes are easy or simple as 1080 transcodes.
I do not think anyone has publicly documented or benchmarked the various quicksync gpu’s for 4k performance (assuming that is one of the things the OP is wanting to do but doesn’t state).
I ended up going with the NUC8 i5. The Passmark benchmark difference between the two is 1422 while the graphics chip in the NUC8 is a lot better. I’m sure the NUC10 is a more powerful device, but seeing as I could get the NUC8 i5 for $220 less, it was an easy choice to make.
Thanks for the input! Now to build this thing and expand my library
Thanks for this - have you got any comparisons? I’d love to know exactly how much better the 10 would be as the 8 is a little cheaper, but I’ll happily pay if it’s a marked difference in transcode numbers.
I don’t run into the problems of the buggy Intel iHD driver which is required for all -9xxx and above CPUs
My i7-7700 (in the QNAP NAS) can stream & transcode to everything in the house at once + a few desktop sessions during stress test with ease. The NUC is unstoppable. ( I ran out of clients when testing the – 8 transcode sessions – The limit was CPU due to transcoding audio. Video had no difficulties whatsoever.
