Intel NUC 8 i5 8259U as Plex Server

Hello everyone,

I think to get an Intel NUC 8 i5 (NUC8i5BEK2 with i5-8259U (4x 2.3GHz)) with a Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus 1 TB and for the RAM G.Skill Aegis DIMM Kit 16GB DDR4-3000. As OS I would use Ubuntu.

Would this be enough to run as plex server? There are a few users (2-3 users) and I would transcode not more than 1080p.
Are there any experiences about that? Will the NUC become warm? It would be in the living room next to the TV.

Thanks and best regards

It’ll be more than adequate for what you need. In fact it’ll barely break a sweat for what you’re needing to do.

given that hardware transcoding is in place

I do love intel NUCs, with its 8th generation you get massive cpu power and and 9.5th gen igpu which is capable to handle on the good hardware transcoding magic. Don’t get me wrong even without hardware transcoding this box is a bloody beast, but I am not sure if the fan will remain quite then.

If the ubuntu drivers are on par with this little gem’s igpu, it is a match from heaven

I wish when I updated my homelab hardware, I would have bought three of thoses boxes instead of three Dell T30.

Picking up on this, as I’ve started looking at these Intel boxes this week too. My current NAS is a QNAP 251+, looking for something more potent, and with more flexible storage arrangement as an upgrade.

Is it possible/Does it make sense to pair one of these Intel NUC’s with a raidbox of some sort, and have it feed content to the plex server via a USB 3.1 connection?

I use a NUC8I5BEH to run Plex in a docker container on a ubuntu virtual machine. This is connected to a number of drives in an old N54L by iSCSI. Not had any issues with the setup.

And I use a NUC8I5BEH for Plex with win 10. I don’t have a huge library so it all fits on the 1TB NVME boot drive and a normal 2.5" internal.
It’s plenty fast enough for my needs and as a bonus idles at very low power consumption. i have it plugged in to a power meter and it is currently using 3watts. Most I have seen it draw when Plex is active is still under 30W and usually 20W or less.

I’ve stopped using Plex on my Freenas box and it is now just a backup destination. may even shut it down between PC backups.
