So im about to buy me a new device to host as a plex server. and thinking about buying the intel nuc i7 (skylake).
Up til today i’ve been using a mac mini (late 2012) with an i7 cpu.
So my old computer (mac mini) has a passmark of about 8k and the intel nuc has something around 9k. so theres all good…
what im more curious is if the cpu in the intel nuc has some cons since its more or less a “laptop-cpu”?
or is there some other device i’ve missed that lands somewhere around 8-9k passmark that would be better to buy?
I have had the Skull NUC of which you speak now for around 6 months.
Mine runs 24/7 streaming to a big variety of clients. 3-4 inhouse and upto 7-8 outside
85% of my streaming is direct play due to my mainly optimized media.
Inside 250gb Samsung SSD and 16gb RAM,
and networked to my synology NAS for the media.
It hasn’t been without occasional issues but I would put those few down to Windows10 and updates, not the hardware!
There are plenty of cheaper alternatives but not in a little box!
AND at a third of the price I would seriously look at the Nvidia Shield pro if a server is all you need.
I have both and would never use the shield pms if I had multiple clients and anticipated any transcoding needed. And I LOVE my shield. Absolutely best plex client I have and I have had firetv, roku, apple tv
I changed over from Shield Pro to NUC I7-6770HQ, 16GB. I don’t currently have hardware transcoding enabled. What is the general concensious from owners of the 6770HQ on enabling hardware transcoding?
