Intel Quick Sync * Intel CPU generation * cores/threads benefits

I have a Synology DS918+ with HW transcode that stuggles with multiple or 4k stream transcode, so I’m looking at setting up a dedicated transcode box.
Does the CPU generation and/or number of cores or threads have an impact on Intel Quick Sync and hardware transcoding? If so, what’s the rule of thumb?

The J3455 CPU can perform 4 parallel HW transcodes of 2160p → 1080p with ease and perform audio conversion.

Every Synology will struggle is with subtitle burning.

If you are looking to separate “compute” from “storage”,

  • i7-7xxx and i7-8xxx will comfortably transcode 6 concurrent HW streams (upper limit is about 600 Mbps of video).
  • i9 can do more CPU (audio and subtitle burning but video still about the same)
