Ipv6 support for myplex

Do you believe it is still necessary to craft and manually add the URL?

I believe enabling IPv6 is enough for the address to be automatically registered with the Plex cloud / myPlex.

Any router or firewall needs to configured to allow traffic on that port. This would vary per device.

IPv6 is functional for at least Apple clients, and web browsers with IPv6 support can visit https://app.plex.tv.

I’m unsure about other clients.

Ah, I actually haven’t tested this in a while. The remote access page in settings still shows as offline/inaccessible but I haven’t tried to use it without manually adding the URL. If it does work, then all the functionality is actually in place, and only the UI needs updating.

Oh yeah agreed. The whole Remote Access screen becomes almost vestigial if only IPv6 is available.

Thank you for that information. Your details with an example finely allowed me to set that up correctly.
Unfortunately it still didn’t work for me. The reason according to another user is because T-Mobile blocks incoming both IPv4 and IPv6.
I can thank all the unscrupulous individuals that hack stuff for all this blocking from T-Mobile….:man_shrugging:t2::roll_eyes:

Nah, it’s probably more that T-Mobile knows that if they allow people to easily accept incoming traffic it will overload their crappy network more quickly. This has nothing to do with hacking. It’s just greed, really.

Your probably right about that.
If they are trying to control usage traffic, I’m not sure why they are going after the home internet market.
My cell phone usage is around 3-5gigs a month. My home internet usage is 300-500gigs a month.
I’m not going to complain. With T-Mobile home internet I pay $50 a month and my download speed averages 450mbit/s upload is 100-140mbits/s
Just signed up for a vpn for $50 for two years. If that all works well I’m happy!

VPN solved some of my problems, but not for plex remote. It seems that nobody wants the kind of traffic that plex remote can generate.

I highly recommend Mullvad as a VPN provider but it won’t help with using Plex from outside.

For accessing Plex from a computer/tablet/phone you’re better off with something like Tailscale or ZeroTier.

Several VPN providers offer port forwarding and can be used to enable Plex Remote Access.

I generally discourage using Plex Media Server with a VPN. But it can be done if it’s the only option.

I would also highly recommend Mullvad as a VPN provider.

And Mullvad does support port forwarding. I’ve configured Plex Remote Access using Mullvad.

Mullvad even has some how-to notes:

Ah fair enough! I never thought of using a VPN’s port-forward for Plex but yeah I don’t see why it wouldn’t work. Performance may suffer depending on several factors, including the VPN exit location but it’s certainly worth a shot!

Have just noticed that users are now automatically connecting in to PMS over IPv6.
Thanks Plex devs!

What client types - Apple, Web? Or other things too?

Mixed results for me. It seems to work but not always. I imagine they are working on it, just haven’t quite finished it yet. Looks like progress though, let’s just hope it wasn’t accidental and doesn’t get reverted!

Remote access in an IPv6 environment over Plex Web has been working for a few months now (at least that’s when I’ve noticed it). If you experience a “seems to work but not always” situation, there might still be some hiccup/glitch in your remote access setup/configuration.

The iOS/tvOS apps have been able to access a remote PMS in an IPv6 environment for some time.

My remote access setup works fine, thanks. If I leave the URL in the custom access URLs config, it’s pretty much flawless. If I remove it, it mostly works but not always - and it’s very annoying when it doesn’t, so I leave it there.

Also just tested on an Android TV app that used to work and now it’s only connecting via relay. Other devices on the same network connect directly. It’s definitely not there yet.

Hi, on my end nothing has changed. With IPV6 enabled it still connects only via IPV4 and transcodes.

I can’t find a way to “force” PMS to ignore IPV4 and only try IPV6. Even on Apple devices, and via plex web.

Is there a definitive guide now to setup that ? That didn’t work for me : Ipv6 support for myplex - #405 by cassianoleal?

Yeah this is flaky at best. I haven’t had many issues once I got it working though.

I would try to connect to the URL you’re adding (i.e. the https://ABCD-1234-ABCD-1234-ABCD-1234-ABCD-1234.0123456789abcdef0123456789abcdef.plex.direct:32400/web one) from the device where you’re having trouble.

If that connection can’t be established, then it’s likely either you have the URL wrong or you have a firewall in the way. That, or the place you’re connecting from doesn’t have IPv6 support at all in which case none of this will work.

I know I have CGNAT IPV4 and one unique IPV6 from my ISP. with that IPV6 address the custom url doesn’t work. And I have limited access even on app.plex.tv.

On the other hand I can access my NAS with quick connect without problem BUT it can only open stock apps, not third-party ones like plex. So the quick connect url doesn’t work either.

I’m trying to setup a DDNS and have that url in plex but I need to somehow sort port forwarding for that. (port forwarding for plex is setup)

What’s killing me is that there is no “Disable IPV4” setting, because even with “Enable IPV6” ticked, it continues to prefer IPV4 and there is no way to force it otherwise…
