Server Version#: last one
.years ago I discover using my ds215j that plex was reencoding a film when I want to add subtitle. Now I have a 218+.
Is it possible to remove this feature so that the player deal with subtitle without reencoding the film (consume ressources) ?
Plex should only burn the subtitles in the video if the respective player cannot deal with your subtitles (or the combination of container/video/subtitle tracks). This is mostly true for image based subtitles as you see them on DVDs (Vobsub) or Blu-Rays (PGS). Some players support those natively (e.g. IIRC Plex for Android TV, Apple TV, Plex’ desktop players) – other smart tv-apps or the browser version of Plex cannot handle those image based subtitles and require your server to burn them into the video.
TL;DR: you can disable transcoding for good but in that case you won’t be able to stream the video with its subtitles.
thanks a lot. there are some plex player that don’t support subtitle usage ? ok the browser version.
what about the android app ?
This is mostly about image based subtitles. Text based subtitles like SRT are a different matter.
Android should be able to display image based subtitles.
