Is it possible to use Plex without the internet?

I’ve looked through the forum and although people have asked similar questions (https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/286789/how-to-access-plex-web-app-without-internet, http://forums.plex.tv/discussion/202729/running-plex-without-internet) I haven’t been able to find a definitive answer to this question.

My current setup is as follows:

Plex Media Server - Installed on my computer
Plex Home Theatre - Installed on my computer
Open PHT - Installed on my computer
Plex Media Player - Installed on my computer
Media files - Available on my NAS storage device which is connected directly to the router

I have the latest versions for all of the above as of today (12/09/17).

In order to see the files in Plex I have to use the internet (tethering on my mobile) to sign in. Once I’m signed in I’m unable to play the files since I’m no longer connected to the router. If I connect to the router then I’m automatically signed out from Plex (despite ‘Automatic sign in’ being turned on) and therefore unable to view my files anymore (for example in Open PHT I just see the ‘Search’ links repeated on the main screen). If I’m lucky enough to already be on a video (and connected to my router) then when I try play the file I get the following error: ‘no audio or video data played’. I’m 99% sure if my router was connected to the internet that everything would work (as per https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/264548/there-was-a-problem-playing-this-item-no-audio-or-video-data-played)… And for what it’s worth I did have it all set up and running in the place I used to live . I haven’t changed any settings/hardware/setup etc. since then.

I’m happy to use any player if one supports offline access better than another although my preference is to use Open PHT if possible.

I tried the suggestion on HowToGeek (https://www.howtogeek.com/303282/how-to-use-plex-media-server-without-internet-access/) to no avail. So… Am I trying to achieve the impossible here!?

Any guidance is much appreciated.

Cheers,

Marc

P.S - Could having multiple players installed on the same computer cause any issues/incompatibilities or should they all play nicely together?

You should be able to specify an IP and port in each client and not need internet access or remote access enabled.

Thanks for the fast response @nokdim. I think that’s a similar solution to the one I tried from HowToGeek (linked in the main issue) although that was a ‘range’ option so perhaps ranges don’t work as well. Just to clarify… Which IP address should I put here? The one for my PC, router or NAS storage device?

Sorry if that’s a stupid question but I’m pretty novice when it comes to networking and can’t logically work it out…

no stupid questions just stupid answers…

You would put the IP of your Plex Media server so whatever PC IP that has the Plex Media Server installed and running on it.
Not your router and not your NAS (unless you run plex on your NAS)

@nokdim you are amazing!! Thank you so much for your help. Setting the address as per your first response worked and I seem to be able to access all of my files even when not connected.

Thanks for your help; it’s much appreciated!!
