No matter what I set the “Theme music” setting to in Plex from Quiet to Loud the actual volume level is the same (which seems to always be “Loud”). “Off” works at least. Is this a known issue in Android TV?
Just tested on a Hisense Android TV running 10.30.2.3548 and a NVidia Shield Pro running the same, and they are both fine. My normal theme music volume is “Low” and I turned it up to “Loud” and then when I tested it I had to quickly turn the TV volume down to keep from waking people up.
I then ran app updates on the Shield, and confirmed after it finished the Plex app is now 10.30.4.4092. I redid the same test and the theme music still has the same behavior. Low setting is fine at TV volume 10 but with the Loud setting it blasts and I’m turning the TV down to half that to get it in the same relative loudness.
Since I didn’t find any issue there, I did that same on the Hisense TV. After the updates we’re again on 10.30.4.4092. I checked the same program and again the theme music volume is definitely much louder when I set it to Loud as opposed to the normal Low setting, necessitating adjusting the TV down to half the normal volume.
I should have mentioned my source is an onn 4k Plus configured with HDMI passthrough to a Denon AVR-X3700H receiver with a 5.2.2 speaker configuration. I assume your setup is with internal TV speakers? I’m wondering if this something specific to the onn or using a receiver?
Both the Shield and the TV itself use HDMI passthrough since the TV supports HD audio formats. The TV seems to have slightly hotter audio output compared to when playing the Shield’s audio (half a volume step maybe).
I doubt HDMI passthrough should really have an impact on the playback itself, as themes are universally mp3 stereo (at least that’s the format they want when you submit them to Plex). I’d say this is either an issue specific to the onn device or maybe there is an auto-loudness setting on your receiver? Do you have another Android device to check? Also try bypassing the receiver.
I don’t have auto-loudness enabled on my receiver. I don’t have another Android TV device to check with, but I had been using a Roku Ultra with this same equipment until I recently got the onn 4k Plus, and I know the Roku Ultra had no issues with theme music volume.
I am seeing an odd issue with the onn 4k Plus where the audio going to my receiver is always DD+, and while the channel count varies, I am never seeing Atmos, even for shows and services that would normally deliver it (like Severance on AppleTV). It worked fine with the Roku, but not the onn. Best I get is 7.1 sound, but my receiver never sees an Atmos signal and the height channels never activate. Very odd.
