Is there a thread to follow for status on hardware-based HDR tone mapping?

Server Version#: 1.24.1.4931
Player Version#: Any/All

Is there a thread one can subscribe to where there is an updated status on support for hardware-based HDR tone mapping during transcoding on NAS platforms? I’m particularly interested in Synology platforms, because I’m running on a DS1520+, but it seems that since November 2020, when the feature was released for Linux platforms, the only options for NAS users has been to use Docker.

All over the forum, I read that “we’re working on the feature.” I keep looking at the release notes for every update, only to be continually disappointed. For Intel-based solutions like mine and from the outside looking in, the inclusion of the OpenCL and beignet packages seems to be a not-too-difficult item to address (here’s where I point out that in an open-source solution, the relative ease or difficulty would be readily apparent).

I’m aware of the logistical challenges involved in building the packages required to support the myriad of hardware platforms that Plex supports, and that there are limited developer resources for fixing this issue with admittedly limited appeal. I also know there have been other package development priorities on the Synology platform, especially with the recent release of DSM7. However, I’ve not seen any updates for any NAS platform with this feature enabled, with the only available information being in the support article on the topic. So, is it actually being worked on? Has a native, non-container-based solution been released for any supported NAS platform? Is there any hope of greater transparency about the scheduling of this work, and if so, where do we get that information?

I’m also interested in this.

Also interested in this, for Synology platforms specifically, and I agree with everything said here - except I disagree that it’s an issue with limited appeal. With every passing day HDR tonemapping only becomes more necessary, and that will continue to be the case.

I can however rather confidently answer that there will be no greater transparency on the scheduling. I believe it is being worked on, but I don’t expect them to say much about it up until the feature is done and released.

I’m also interested in this, my Playback grids to a halt when watching hdr file on non hdr tv. Synology 1520+ User. DSM7

I honestly expect no transparency at all, and I fully understand the reasons why, even if I don’t agree with them. I’ve worked as a developer in commercial software for about 30 years now, and software corporations of any size are reluctant to make any statements that could even remotely be considered in the realm of the neighborhood of a “promise to deliver.” They don’t want to disappoint customers, nor open themselves up to potential liability for “forward looking statements.” Nevertheless, it would be great to see this happen, and I really dislike the constant disappointment.

Please Plex, my 918+ cries every day this isn’t released - it can handle in HW mode 3x full 1:1 UHD transcodes to 1080p without even hitting 50% without tonemapping in the equation - why do you want to make my NAS cry?:sob:

Why don’t you use docker linuxserver.io PMS which supports hw tone mapping?

I’d rather KISS with Synology/DSM (as much as Synology tried to screw that up with DSM & 7.0) - Docker is just another complexity in the chain that I’d rather not, especially seeing as it worked fine until they broke things with the way they implemented tonemapping (and the hodge podge of a rollout for it with support for x/y/z when Jupiter aligns with Mars on products 1/2/3 - meanwhile only at high tide on a third Sunday of every month, products 4/5/6 will support features a/b/c)

I suppose in my original post that I should’ve mentioned that I’m fully aware of a Docker-based solution. I prefer not to use it, as it increases the complexity of my installation, and unnecessarily so. I rather thought that was implied when I referenced a “native, non-container-based solution,” but I guess I wasn’t clear enough there.
