Is there a way to get Plex to automatically use filename titles for unlisted TV specials?

I get most of my shows straight from the home media releases, so there’s tons of specials. TVDB will have most specials for popular series but nothing for lesser known shows. And they’ll have a lot of unexpected gaps.

I’m currently using the naming convention “S00E100 Special Title”. This lists them in the specials as “Episode 100”. I would just like to have it use the filename’s title, instead of having nothing.

If there’s a hacky way to do this I would be happy. Not sure it’s worth implementing this feature for everyone as I’m not sure how widespread this problem is. And I don’t want to manually add the titles as there’s hundreds at this point, and it could easily be lost when migrating the server.

Also not interested in doing all the grunt work for TVDB and spend months filling out their missing metadata.

There’s currently no way to get that behavior in Plex.

If this is about disc extras instead of actual special episodes you could treat them as local extras. The Plex TV Series agent will recognize extras on all tiers (show, season, episode). However not all app currently supports displaying them on all tiers (all apps should be able to display show-level extras, Apple TV/Android TV will additionally display episode-level extras; only iOS/Android mobile apps will display extras for all tiers)

If your files are using the mp4/m4v container format, you can embed the episode title into the “Title” meta tag. From where Plex can read it.

Try Mp3tag - the universal Tag Editor (ID3v2, MP4, OGG, FLAC, ...)
