Hello, is there an updated VPN advice / discussion anywhere? I thought there would be a write-up by now in the help section with details of how to set one up properly with Plex and maybe like 5 of the most recommended VPN services available. If anyone knows a good tutorial on how to set one up, please give me links. I always bail on setting one up because I don’t want my family not to get my server to their homes and I know there were issues in the past with that and I always wonder should/could I do it through my router and does that cover my entire network or should I do it on a single PC? Can it be done and should it be done on multiple PCs in the home or does one connection cover it? That always confused me as I am not even sure if what I am stating here is correct. Any advice on which VPN service is good with Plex or how to set a VPN up with helpful links would be greatly appreciated.

Well I just got done trying to figure it out on my own again. I still get intimidated and give up. I just dont get it. Am I supposed to use OpenVPN and a different Paid service together? Do I somehow merge the 2? Which service is best with Plex before I spend any money I dont have, and I want to run it through my tomato FW router on a Netgear r7000 I THINK but I bailed because I just get so confused on who to listen to and who’s video to follow. Some are on Linux, some windows, I just dont get VPN setups and I guess I never will. If anyone has any advice or good links to follow with Tomato router, please let me know. I think doing it thru the router would be best but I dont even know that for certain. Thanks in advance if anyone can help clear up my confusion for me.

Thank you much. Still intimidated but going to try again soon. Can you tell me do I use OpenVPN with Tomato and then do I need to purchase a pay VPN and install that as well? That is what I am most confused about and if I need to pay for one, do you have any suggestions that work well with Plex, Thankyou very much

Install the script on your router which will (the router…) then become an OpenVPN client to your selected VPN provider. Anything that connects to the router (unless you exclude it via the script…) will route through the VPN. The selected IP #'s and DNS entries (that you enter into the script…) will also route around the VPN thus being “in the clear.”
As far as your VPN provider goes, that is up to you based on your needs. here are a few recent reviews…
Myself, I use PIA…

Thanks you so much for that explanation. Every self help video was by VPN wanting you to use their service and I wasnt sure if the process was all the same. Now If I question something, I can come back to this and figure out what I should be doing. Thanks again

Hi again Jason. I was reading the links you suggested and was contemplating using PIA since you seem to have success with it and then as I was reading Toms HW article where it lists PIA as #1, it also states this _
“Private Internet Access was our top overall performer and the cheapest full-fledged VPN service we tried out, and it has more than 3,000 connection servers. The only downside is that you can’t select your own username. Making Private Internet Access our VPN service of choice was almost a no-brainer, but anyone wary of the U.S. government may want to consider another service.”
_
and I am not sure why? Are they located in the USA and that is why? Are they not as secretive as other VPNs and if so, how could they be #1. I really wanted to use this one because I found an excellent well explained setup for Tomato using PIA but what do they mean by that last sentence? If you are located in the USA, you should look elsewhere? I am not sure how to take that and any insight would be appreciated because like I said, I was all but signed up until I read that. Thanks again

Unless you have a tinfoil hat that has your name on it, your fine with PIA…
