Is there any way to automatically have plex create collections from folders?

I have a ton of files and they are all grouped in folders. I added each folder separately in the hope Plex would automatically put them in collections per folder but that apparently is not happening. Is there a way to achieve this?

No.
The only way to get (one) collection into Plex from files is to use the mp4/m4v container format. Put the name of the desired collection into the ‘album’ meta tag.

Tools like “TheRenamer” and “FileBot” will help you do the work of getting most of your files renamed and properly organised

If you have the files in MKV format you can use the free tool called Mp3Tag. You can use it to edit the different tags also.
