Well Joe, you and I will have to disagree on this one. What the Plex guidelines say and what the courts say are two very different things. In my line of work I’m pretty much forced to use the courts’ opinion.
I’m not sure what the courts have to do with forum moderators or accurate answers shared in good faith, but sure.
If you think forum mods have knowledge of third party metadata sales though… You may want to think about how companies work all over again. There’s no ‘gotcha!’ moment to be had by questioning a mod.
The road to large judgments is paved with self-confident people who spoke these words.
Take my advice and never represent yourself in court. You’re not quite ready for it.
Never claimed to be a lawyer, or that Is’d represent myself.
The jump you just made is insane though.
A forum mods doesn’t know anything about contracted sale of metadata, at any company, anywhere, even if they worked for them.
It’s simply not helpful to anyone, including yourself, and I’ll leave it at that.
Jeez Joe. I only asked Otto a question. He said he didn’t know. Fair enough. I didn’t accuse him of genocide or anything.
I’m not sure how asking a simple question is an insane jump or an affront to anyone’s dignity.
(And for the record, I like Otto and I wouldn’t push anything on him that would cause him grief. As you said, he’s one of the best sources around here for quality info.)
You did a ‘gotcha! Plex just admitted to selling metadata!’
With someone who has absolutely zero involvement or association with any sort of anything related to metadata. And isn’t an employee.
Either way, I think that discussion is done.
This unpleasantness could be easily solved by adding a toggle switch for these online features. Simply adding the ability to turn the online stuff on and off would give the community a feeling of security and goodwill, and more people may be likely to actually use these services because they would TRUST Plex.
I, for one, have no interest in streaming in Plex. I have a Roku for that. But, I might be more interested if it was optional. And by optional, I mean a toggle where it would completely hide it from me and my users/family, not “unpin” it into an easily accessed submenu.
The “we can’t do this because Plex would be too complex” excuse is disingenuous. Plex is already complex enough that anyone who wants to use it faces a certain learning curve. A few more options isn’t going to deter anyone.
Plex, the company, definitely has a trust issue brewing, and it’s been getting worse. Some quick and easy programming could solve it, turn people’s opinions around, and be overall better for the company in the long run. We all want to support Plex. Just support us back!
@OttoKerner Hey Otto,
@josephmgaffney seems to think that I asked you an inappropriate question in an inappropriate way.
If you feel that’s the case then I sincerely apologize. I’m only trying to get to the bottom of where Plex is heading with all this Discover stuff and, since neither BigWheel or any of the other seniors around here are answering that question I thought I’d run it by you to see if you had anything to say about it.
I’m sorry again if you think that was inappropriate and you are, as always, quite welcome to boot me from the forum if you think my question was offensive in any way. I will not complain one bit if you do.
Cheers.
Possibly the best post I’ve seen about this topic since the discussion started - thank you. You summarized my feelings exactly.
Lol … naaa im good … im just saying that their lack of transparency is problematic but that it could be possible for them to eliminate duplicates without sending things to them. After re-reading the post it doesnt seem like that is the case and the concerns are warranted. I apologize for the confusion that led to the comment about me sharing my personal info. It is probably out there already but I am one of those people that actually care about privacy when no one seems to have even the slightest concept of it anymore. With all The facebooks and twits and … etc. hehe
