Issue: Second PMS installed acts as portal to main server

I have one PMS running on Ubuntu 20 for some time now. i tried to stand up a second server just for transcoding and after installing the OS, and PMS v1.40.5.8829 on both. one server’s ip is 10.x.x.100 the other is 101. when i shut down 100, 101 looks as though it would if you accessed your server from plex.tv being unavailable.

i recall being able to add a second server with a different name previously and unless something changed from the Plex side, this doesn’t seem to work anymore. any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have several servers on my LAN :see_no_evil: lol

The key to make this work:

  1. Each has their own IP on the same subnet (no need to get fancy)
  2. You claim it locally by using it’s LAN IP (not https://app.plex.tv)
  3. Each server connects to Plex.tv one time to register itself
( I created a Remote Access port for each with proper port forwarding, each gets a different WAN port number, … then disabled remote access for those which are LAN-only )

All Plex clients are centered around the Plex user account.
It doesn’t matter from where you are loading the web app. It will always show your Plex account – to which there might be more than one servers attached.
The list of pinned media sources in the left side bar is synchronized by default between instances of web apps in the same user account.
Which means the side bar (and with it the home page) will not change if you load the local web app from a different server.

After you have fired up a new server, do first refresh the web app in your browser.
Then switch the side bar to the MORE… mode and see all servers and their libraries listed.
Now you can modify the “pinned” libraries, to get a mixture of media sources on the home page – if you want that kind of thing.

i did try to claim it using the lan ip, it brings me to the setup url, however shows the config of the primary server.

while i have been cleaning up the directories of the first server, i saw Otto’s comment and when i tried going to the setup page, it returned " Setup is not allowed for shared servers." which i think is a clue. somehow plex thinks the second server is a shared server?

it is definitely unusual, i have setup plex many times previously on ubuntu, centos and windows and this is the first time having issues like this with a second server…

One way to bypass what Plex thinks it is
(maybe you claimed it with a different account)

  1. SSH into the box (or open a terminal window if you have direct access)
  2. GitHub - ChuckPa/UserCredentialReset: User Credential Reset utility for Plex
  3. Follow the instructions & example
