The new chromecast with Google TV came out today. Picked it up and tried out Plex (not beta). There’s a serious bug it seems (and I tried other apps and didn’t have this issue):
If the audio option on the chromecast (in the google tv settings) is set to “manual”, videos with a Dolby track on plex stutter at an extreme rate - like it only shows one frame of video every 2 seconds. The video basically looks like a slideshow. The sound stutters at the same pace with the video and barely plays.
There are 3 options in the google tv audio settings: Dolby digital plus with atmos, Dolby digital, Dolby digital plus. Any combination of these turned off or on and the issue exists in plex, and plex only . However, change the audio settings from manual to AUTO or Never Output Surround sound, and videos with Dolby content play fine without any video and sound stuttering. I’m surprised that it’s causing VIDEO issues and not just sound issues. That just seems to weird to me that it would effect the video as well.
(FYI, I’m using a Samsung Dolby atmos soundbar and an LG OLED tv. This isn’t an issue with my setup)
Here’s hoping you guys can take a look at this and provide a fix!
Slightly off topic on your issue above but I am interested to see how the new Chromecast goes with direct play.
Have you tried to play any x265 content with it? Does it direct play or does it still need to transcoded?
Looking for a cheap option for my inlaws to watch content.
Thanks
Just did a quick experiment. I copied a file with DTS audio down to the chromecast and played it directly there. It played with DTS sound as expected with no issues. Same file played through the Plex client failed with “cannot play this video”.
Something in the Plex client is having trouble sending the DTS stream down, not sure what the issue is.
Same line issue with the app Stan certain files i suspect DTS and will not play the audio… it may not just be plex with the new google tv…edit found disabling surround sound fixes the audio on plex for ACC audio files
