Issues with plex migration from windows to synology dsm 7

I am attempting to migrate my plex setup from windows 10 (1.26.0.5715) to DSM 7 (package PlexMediaServer-1.26.1.5762-912e6f050-x86_64_DSM7.spk).

I’ve reviewed the topics at Migration of Metadata from Windows to DSM 7.0 Plex and Synology FAQ - Questions, Answers, and a few How-To's - #33 by ChuckPa. (Great write-ups, BTW @ChuckPa )

But… I’m not seeing the migration actually happen (either at package install time or after running plex) – and there is no migration log to be found anywhere.

I need some help. TY!

A few questions:

  1. You created a Plex shared folder containing Library/Application Support
  2. Under Application Support you placed Plex Media Server from Windows ?
  3. Did you already install the DSM 7 package ?

I recreated the DSM shared structure “/Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server” and unzipped dirs like Media, Metadata, etc to it. There are 10 populated subdirs.

I installed the package… waited a bit, then ran ‘plex’ on DSM.

I see that the “/PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server” folder was created and several subdirs were created, but NOT the Media or Metadata folders.

Plex opened a local browser window which is still ‘spinning’. No CPU/disk activity for the plex process. No ‘migration.log’ anywhere.

Also… I examined topic “DSM 7 - Plex Media Server - Release Info & Migration instructions - #6 by ChuckPa” and haven’t done any of that. There are no plex users defined. BUT… I get no error messages either.

If the installer didn’t immediately go into “migrating” mode (where it sits at "Installing) for an extended period – and creates Migration.log – then it couldn’t read the contents of the Plex shared folder -OR- something was missing.

Let’s go through the checklist:

  1. The Plex shared folder must be readable by everyone
  2. It must contain Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server

On DSM 7, Plex no longer has any administrative privileges . Because if this, you must ensure the new DSM 7 username (PlexMediaServer) can read it. If it can’t read the shared folder then it won’t detect the data and start migrating it.

Since you have already installed the package , even though it didn’t detect the Plex shared folder, we can use that to our advantage

  1. Uninstall the package with the ERASE option. (this removes the empty DSM 7 structure

  2. Control Panel - Shared Folder - EDIT the Plex share

  3. Follow this FAQ segment – “Scenario 2” to set the permissions for all files & folders in the “Plex” share to be Full Control by “PlexMediaServer”. This will take some time to complete (depends on how much metadata there is to process). You’ll know it’s complete when FileStation returns to normal . (Don’t worry if you’re installing on a different volume than the Plex shared folder… the FAQ needs updating)

  1. Now, with all the permissions set, reinstall the DSM 7 Plex package again.

  2. If you’ve done everything correctly, it’ll go right to “Installing” and sit there.

  3. After a few minutes, (Using a separate browser tab to connect to the Syno) you’ll be able to see “Migration.log” and follow the progress.

The updated permissions seem to have done the trick!

Found the migration log. It says " Completed: Migrate Plex Media Server".

Did notice a small item I’d suggest you add to “FAQ 27 - Migrating an existing PMS from DSM 6 to DSM 7”, scenario 2.

After step 4d, I hadn’t noticed I needed to select ‘system internal user’ from the top left to find the plexmediaserver user – took some hunting.

All in all, the migration went very quickly. TY for your help. I’ll crank up plex on DSM now and proceed with the steps for " After migration is complete and Plex “Claimed”:.

One other Q: will this create an entirely new plex instance or am I duplicating my windows server. I’d prefer to run them in parallel for a short while.

I don’t use / support windows so you will know this more than I –

If you don’t have a Preferences.xml on Windows
-and-
You didn’t create Preferences.xml by hand from Windows Registry info

THEN

You’ll have a new server instance. (PMS servers have their friendly name but are tracked by server UUID which is stored in Preferences.xml)

I -do- have and did copy over the preferences.xml. I could modify that? Or should I follow “FAQ 25: Reclaiming a lost server” and use a new claim token?

I just looked at your account.

I am not seeing the Synology yet.
I do see the Windows server.

To separate the two, without breaking things:

  1. Stop Plex
  2. Install the Synology Text Editor app (Package Center)
  3. File Station → PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server
  4. Right-click “Preferences.xml” → Open with Text Editor.

You now have the file open in the Web editor.

  1. Carefully remove the Name="Value" pairs for
  • MachineIdentifier
  • ProcessedMachineIdentifier
  • AnonymousMachineIdentifier
  1. SAVE the file

  2. Start PMS

Now you should be able to open Settings → Authorized Devices (left corner)
and see both the Windows and Synology servers

I think this worked. I also changed the ‘friendly name’ and then claimed it. Needed to setup an addl router port so both are available externally. Now onto adding the new media libs to NAS! Appreciate all the help!

This look right to you? :sunglasses:

The user has 2 servers: NAS MPC2022

It looks perfect. TY!
