Keep getting a message that the server is unclaimed after every reboot.

Recently move my Plex installation from a Mac to Ubuntu and now with every reboot of the server, I get the message that the media server is unclaimed and i have to reclaim it. How do I resolve the issue?

If it is ‘unclaimed’, this means your username is not in "/var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Preferences.xml"

The very first things to check:

  1. Ownership of the file (ls -la) which also includes ownership of the directory
  2. It should respond with:
[chuck@lizum Plex Media Server.108]$ ll

If plex:plex is not the owner, we can fix that.

  1. sudo systemctl stop plexmediaserver
  2. sudo chown -R plex:plex /var/lib/plexmediaserver (takes a bit)
  3. `sudo systemctl start plexmediaserver
