This title should really be renamed to Plex killing PMP on all platforms as it’s not just windows. There’s such a large backlash just under the windows idea, I’d hope someone makes a voting petition to reverse this decision somewhere with an exact representation of what is happening to get more attention. Clearly an unpopular move and Plex aren’t listening. Whatever happened to Plex’s customer interviews they were doing, clearly they didn’t get that data for this decision. Anyone know how they made this decision or what data they actually based it on?
I can’t believe they’re getting rid of the TV mode, I mean I use it exclusively on any PC based device that I’m seriously watching Plex on. What on earth are they thinking? And who wants a web app in a fake desktop client if that’s what it is? No thank you.
I see they’ve turned off comments on the announcement due to too much disagreement (guess they asked Barkley to put his head in the sand for that thread) and yet Plex is still in denial. How much evidence do they need. We don’t like it. Your customers don’t like this decision Plex. Plex - the sane thing to do would be to send another announcement that you’re going to work through this with your community (your paying customers) to agree a solution. Why not turn this into a win? Come on, I dare you…
The largest issue for me is inconsistent playback capability, your own Plex for KODI addon will direct play what ever i chuck at it, the plex for android app though on my shield? well thats just a roll of a dice
@elan once told me it was down to Plex for Android and Kodi using different player stacks, cool ill bite, so why not focus more attention on fixing issues where you have a hole, instead of adding new things nobody asked for, sure the Plex for Windows app is cool we can offline sync and thatll be a god send for holiday, but dont kill of my 10ft display that can direct play what ever i chuck at it because capable android devices cannot according to your app.
Just dig up any post in the android forums, people have been complaining for ages.
But at this point @DaveBinM it feels like fan service, you shouldnt wait for us to get all up in arms upset about something before you say youll take a look, which to me is how it seems, ill send you some samples.
Let us rephrase: it’s not running a native implementation of the UNO paradigm, the way it does on other platforms. We don’t see a repackaged Plex Web client as having much value, even if you add a “Downloads” feature – the loss in accessibility and usability (keyboard navigation and appropriately sized UI) isn’t worth it for most PC/Mac users.
That’s not what these new apps are. The UI is UNO like the web app but the new desktop apps are not web apps in disguise; they have a full mpv player for the backend.
Every time Plex does something it’s a new headache for me. I absolutely feel so abandoned and with all the evangelism I did in Plex’s early days I feel like I was just used. There are many people using plex today (at least two are plex pass subscribers) as a result of me telling them years ago how wonderful it was and today many of those people are now frustrated with me for recommending it…
I’ve been dragging my feet upgrading my server so that I can update Plex server to a version newer than 1.14.1 but I’m becoming convinced that it’s a blessing in disguise that I’ve been dragging my feet on that. Currently RasPlex still works for me and that’s my most used client… the Roku devices are navigational nightmares and my family members who use those now despise plex. My niece and nephew get to use Pappy’s computer if they don’t want to watch what everyone else is using and they have the plex client figured out – they also don’t ever use the web browser because they aren’t old enough for that yet. The Samsung smart TV is still a mess but slowly getting a tiny bit better… I almost replaced that with a Roku at one point but then the Plex Retro channel went away so I considered adding a Raspberry Pi there.
I’m just so tired of this. I miss the days back when Plex was in beta when everything just worked and I could easily put my media on any TV, any computer, or really just about ANY SCREEN that I wanted to and it just worked and nearly always worked with surround sound and all the bells and whistles. Now I just can’t trust that anything is going to work when I wake up tomorrow. An update can be pushed to any one of my HTPC devices that just breaks everything (it can happen as it’s happened to me numerous times already) and even if I get fed up and decide to buy a new device I know that it’s possible that I’m only 6 months to a year before Plex renders that unusable for one reason or another. But at least I can always get Plex to work for me on a computer, right? That was a nice fall back for me until today… and I guess the thing that happens now is we have to buy a separate TV and HTPC device to sit next to the computer just in case my niece and nephew want to watch something?
There have been few times in my life that I’ve ever felt so abandoned by a company but Plex is certainly in the top 10 and probably the top 5… and if we figure just the recent couple years they are easily the number 1 company that consistently irritates me.
The millions of users that use Plex that @elan is talking about are the same ones that are just as content with Hulu and Netflix and just keeping their home movies on hard drives and their phones and passing them around the old fashioned way. The people who embrace Plex and have looked to Plex as the greatest thing to happen to media are the ones that Plex is absolutely giving a clear message to that they simply don’t matter any longer. As for those millions of other users that are oh-so-important, well, they’re the ones that will easily get frustrated with new interfaces and things not working and realize that they are better off just using another platform or are the ones that rely on the power users to help them keep things running… but sure, that seems like a good basket to put all of your eggs in.
The crux of the issue is around 7.1 audio even on this forum posts people are giving you logs and they are being ignored, why am I to think this will be different now.
and you will see a torrent of issues surrounding media capabilities going back years some of which never even get a response just ignored.
And every single one of the playback issues for the android clients would be removed if your android team just moved away from exoplayer and looked towards MPV the same as the rest of the development team for PMP, iOS and even Plex for Windows used, its beyond me why ExoPlayer is still being used!
The kicker for me was that they just got me off of OpenPHT like a month ago when UNO actually made PMP good. Now i have to plan on another client going unsupported soon. Maybe i’ll have moved to 4k and a Shield by then.
And i’m starting to feel like I’m the only person here using the TV interface on his laptop as well. Story of my life as the black sheep!
