Plex Media Player 3.0 feedback

Server Version#: 1.18.8.2468
Player Version#: 3.104.2

I am glad that I stumbled onto the forum posts about this preview build. I have been using it for over 1 month now and have not encountered any problems with it.

I hope that you continue development for PMP 3.x.

Be nice to have an official embedded version again. I know about the nightly builds but what’s the point if your not gonna return to official builds the automatically update?

A ā€˜public’ update for PMP was released just 9 days ago: Plex Media Player

PMP version v2.51.0 has desktop 4.24.1 which was the first update in months bringing it from 3.104.2 to 4.24.1.

I just hope that for the time we continue to have the desktop player within PMP that it continues to receive updates. Eventually it will be discontinued which makes me very sad :frowning:

That is PMP version 2.x. I was talking about PMP version 3 found here…

Hi Folks,

I am wrestling with making PMP more reliable on a basement theater on Windows. I’m running on an Intel NUC with Windows 10, and the key things I need are reliable keyboard commands (for a remote control interfacing with Flirc) that:

  1. Forces PMP 3.0 to launch in fullscreen TV mode (it appears F11 is a toggle, not a discrete ā€œgo full screen at launchā€)
  2. Reliably quits Plex and shuts down the PC

For the first, I have force fullscreen toggled on in the settings. But I’ve had issues in the past where it wasn’t. Any ideas?

For the second, I used to have the remote send an ā€œHā€ (for Home), then an Escape, then navigate down one and select Shutdown. Unfortunately, it appears that the only way I can now make this menu appear is by pressing Escape, which first brings me to Home, then a second Esc brings up the menu. The end result is that I cannot consistently get to this menu from anywhere else (ie, if I’m on Movies, it takes two Esc presses to get to the menu, versus if I am on Home it takes one).

Does anyone have any best practice on how to resolve either of these issues?

The h shortcut is still working for me.

You should be able to append a command line parameter to the shortcut link, so it reads
"C:\Program Files\Plex\Plex Media Player\PlexMediaPlayer.exe" --tv --fullscreen
which forces PMP to TV mode and fullscreen.

Hi Otto - I just verified that the latest preview build of PMP 3.0 (released 9 days or so ago - downloaded from the URL below) does not seem to accept ā€œHā€.

https://artifacts.plex.tv//plex-media-player-experimental/3.0.0.32-d310c89b6/windows/PlexMediaPlayer-3.0.0.32-d310c89b6-windows-x64.exe

I also verified that I have this version installed in Settings->About. Are you sure you have the latest preview version installed? Otherwise every other keyboard command works for me, so I am a bit stumped that it works for you.

Thank you for the command line parameters - super helpful!

Otto, I believe I found the problem. The ā€œHā€ / Home button only works when you are not showing the Plex navigation menu (Home/Movies/TV Shows/etc). If that sidebar is showing, H is ignored. In the past, pressing H even there would bring you to the Home entry, upon which point one could press Esc and have a predictable path to quit Plex.

The 3.0 version was a preview, intended to test the use of updated code libraries.
It has since been superseded by regular updates of the 2.x branch.
I suggest you go back to the official branch for now.

Then why did @tobiashieta, a Plex Employee, state ā€œLet us know if there is anything causing you issues with this latest build since we are planning to replacing the 2.x series with this soon.ā€

Are there any plans in integrating the new libraries into PMP 2.x in the near future?

PMP 3.0 fixed my audio passthrough issues with DTS-HD HRA and was actually passed through as DTS Hi-Res to my receiver. When using 2.x, it doesn’t passthrough any sound. I assume this is to do with the newer versions of MPV in PMP 3.0.

My problem with PMP 3.0 was that OpenGL support was broken when trying to use it with my GT1030 in my HTPC, which is essentially required for me to get perfect 2160p playback as the CPU isn’t strong enough and DXVA2 doesn’t play nicely at all.

Returning back to PMP 2.x and OpenGL is working again but HRA passthrough is broken…

Edit: Looks like my nVidia Shield 2017 has the same issue with not being able to passthrough DTS HRA.

Oh! I wonder if this is responsible for the same issues I’m seeing with the newest beta. I’m using a GTX670 myself.

Did you have the same OpenGL issues with the previous beta (3.0.0.24)?

I tried using the 3.0.0.24 beta this morning as a test for you and it’s not really working at all. When using 3.0.0.24, playback was very choppy with no DTS HRA support. I also tried transplanting the mpv.dll from different versions to see if I can get newer library support and still retain OpenGL playback, that didn’t work.

3.0.0.24 gave me:

  • Video playback working very poorly, with and without OpenGL
  • No DTS HRA support, which is what I’m looking for

3.0.0.32 gave me:

  • Video playback not working at all when using OpenGL
  • DTS HRA support working perfectly, I can hear sound and my receiver reports Hi Res audio, but no video playback at all, just the blurred Plex background remains
  • Disabling OpenGL provided video playback, but my 6600k wasn’t fast enough to fully decode 4k HEVC without dropping frames

I’m back to using 2.54 with OpenGL and just choosing different audio tracks for the lack of DTS HRA support until the Plex team can finally update the MPV libraries.

Have you tried using PMP 2.54?
The GTX670 doesn’t support x265 content, are you trying to decode that with your GPU?

I haven’t used 2.54, I think I changed to the betas back at 2.49 or 47. The stable release does not support 10-bit h264 with a 4:4:4 color space at all and I was watching a show encoded that way. I’m done with that show now so I’ll probably try playing around a bit more like you. Thanks for checking.

Hi. Some issues for v.3.0.0.32

  • Scrolling for menu very slow. Previous version (v.3.0.0.24) it is smoother
  • EAC3 still don’s works (like v.3.0.0.24)

+1 I’m using the MacOS version and playing a 4K HDR movie via direct play is horrible and choppy, the lag is so much that I am basically unable to interact with the UI until the video is paused. Scrolling is bad even when no media is playing.

Rolling back to version 2.42 resolves all of these issues for me.

I’m having problems with DTS-HD Master audio cutting out, I can see on my receiver that it stops getting an audio signal for second, anyone else having this problem?

The latest version (3.0.0.32; although so did the original 3.0.0.24) trashes my direct-to-dac (usb connection) requiring a reboot (afaik) to correct; a single test played just fine on my laptop internal speakers. my hope would be to use this as my sole audio player.

13" MBP (MacBookPro13,2)
macOS Mojave 10.14.6
PS Audio NuWave DAC, USB via Thunderbolt3 dock

macOS version PlexMediaPlayer-3.0.0.24-ff3794e40-x86_64 shows the caution triangles on my Movie and TV Shows sidebar pins, and when I select either one of them with my keyboard cursors, it shows a blank screen and locks up the program.

not usable at all for me if I want to watch a movie that is not on the home screen.
