Last episode date added stopped working

I sort my TV shows by Last Episode Date Added and filter for Unwatched. This puts my list in order of the latest episodes for each show, also shows me the number of unwatched episodes for each show.

I made no changes to my folder/file naming conventions; this has worked fine for me for years. So this week I have a lot of unchanged shows (no new shows, no edits, dates of files on disk unchanged) rising to the top of my list as if they have episodes added that are more current than my actual new episodes. The actual new episodes are showing part way down the list. Last night it was shows from December 2018 and older. I deleted them and everything looked the way it should. Today another group of shows is showing in front of my new shows, these from December 2018 through April 2021. I refreshed metadata but no changes.

Additional info. Each of the TV shows where the last episode date added isn’t working shows up on my FireTV Plex player as being changed about 9 hours ago.

In what way did it stop working? It appears to be correct looking at my own TV library and filtering. I am on 1.41.7 beta for server but i don’t believe there were any fixes in it that would be related.

It is working on shows where I actually added a new episode but a whole lot of shows are showing episodes “added” about 9 hours ago. I am not sure how that date added is determined, I assume from the Plex TV database?

It looks like the Date Added being set to a current date takes precedence over the episode date added (i.e., If Date Added is newer than Episode Date Added, use Date Added in Episode Date Added in sort) So need to figure out how to fix Data Added, not Episode Date Added.

no from your server

Date Added when viewing a show should be the date the of the first time you ever added an episode for that show as a whole. if that is all of a sudden showing it was added 9 hours ago im tyring to think what would change that. possible DB corruption I suppose.

if you use the advanced filter to only view that show by episodes and then sort by date added. is that in the right order?

I think it is only when sorting multiple shows that data added is useful.

I understand I just want to see if when viewing only episodes, if the episodes are in the wrong order when viewing by date added. I will help tell me if the issue is with the metadata for the show as a whole or the individual episodes is where the issue is.

Not sure what you want me to do. I can filter my TV Show list down to just one show, but it doesn’t then switch to showing a list of episodes. When I click on the one show then it shows the list of episodes (if there is only one season). I think that list is in episode date order.

Two quick questions:

  1. Where is your affected media stored? Internal drives, NAS, external USB drive(s), something else?
  2. What is the following set to in your server settings:
Settings -> [Select Server Name] -> Library -> Empty trash automatically after every scan

My media is on a Drobo NAS. I did have that setting checked but now it is off.

Thanks. It’s just a theory, but what may have happened is that either the NAS or the share become unavailable while a library scan was being performed. This could result in items being marked as “trash” in Plex (there’s a record for them in the database, but the associated media is missing).

With the setting I mentioned enabled, if that occurred, the trashed items would automatically be removed from the library. The result is that during the next scan where the media is available again, they’re added back as new items, thereby being “promoted” back to the recently added list.

Disabling the “Empty trash…” setting should prevent the same from happening again, if that was indeed the cause.

If you have a recent database to restore from before when the problem occurred you may be able to get back to where you were by restoring it.

Thanks for the suggestion on restoring a database backup. It looks like things are back in order.
