Latest Chromecast w/ Google TV Update maybe introducing frame drops/connection issues on Plex app?

So, I just checked in Jellyfin, and the problem is there too…

I may be some time… [Enables USB Debugging]

Still nothing from Plex? Find it hard to believe no one from Plex has read this and cannot provide any input? It’s very disappointing that not had any official word.

Even if it’s not a problem Plex can fix surely they would want to liaise with Google to notify them that an update is causing an issue to their app and update the community on their communications? At the moment it feels like this is a dead end and my opinion on Plex is going rapidly downhill

@RAnthony can you mark this as unresolved as that may not be helping in getting this to the attention of Plex? Thank you

Actually, I linked this thread to BigWheel last week, and they acknowledged they checked it out, so they definitely know about it (and they also know the “solution” here isn’t actually a solution, I’m pretty sure.)

I’m actually using a ONN w/ Google TV and experiencing this same issue. I’ve disabled HW Overlays but I still seem to get this frame rate type drop while watching anything at 24hz after a certain amount of time. Closing and going back in seems to fix it for a bit but will eventually return. Like you noted, if I keep it at 60Hz I don’t seem to notice this drop but just makes the viewing experience more juddery.

The workaround has been working great, except when the chromecast does a quiet reboot every now and then and I need to head back into developer settings. Can’t believe this issue still isn’t fixed though - I would have thought this was a very very popular playback device?

Does the last update from Chromecast fixed the issue ?

No. I just tested it and it doesn’t.

A reminder for the people trying to get Plex to fix this, that Plex isn’t the only app affected here.

Can confirm that latest CCWGTV update does not fix this issue.

Still not working on both of my CCWGTV every single time the device sneaky reboots I have to still turn off H/W overlays in dev settings and it works fine.

Honestly, I believe the issues is present on both my chromecasts on another 3rd party Youtube app it won’t play 4k content without studdering without H/W overlay turned off as well… don’t know if this helps or not.

subscribe to thread. I can’t believe this is still a widespread issue.

Yup, this is still a thing you have to do in order to get stutter-free 24fps (or 23.976, to be precise) playback. If you have updated your Chromecast w/ Google TV anytime recently, which prompted a reboot, or had to reboot it, or powered it down and back up for any reason (I recently had one of the aforementioned “quiet reboots” recently and I only found out it had reset the device in the middle of a movie night, which was pretty annoying, LOL), you have to go into the developer’s menu and toggle the “Disable HW Overlay” setting to On in order to get smooth playback.

I also don’t think Google’s going to do anything to address this (was hoping they’d actually announce their new Chromecast by now and I don’t think that’s happening either) so I guess it’s on Plex to see if they can figure out why you have to disable the HW overlay in order to properly display 24fps on Chromecast w/ Google TV.

I don’t know if the new ONN 4K TV Pro has this bug, I think a lot of folks are moving over to that device in the meantime.

Yes same here for me, very disappointed that it’s still an issue and other than keep disabling HW overlay not sure what there really is to do if Google won’t fix it. It would be nice to get Plex’s stance on this but so far nothing

I’m glad I found this answer after tearing apart every part of my thater a few months ago. But all I watch is movies. Is this really only a 24fps issue and is that why no one really camplaints about it in the wider world?

Disney/Hulu/Netflix updated their apps quite a while ago, which seemed to eliminate the stuttering issues when viewing their content, so it sounds like it’s possible for Plex to fix this in the Google TV app.

Like most others here, I’ve been dealing with this issue for ~6 months now (after a few initial hours of checking every connection and setting). Why do we still have to slap a band-aid on it every few days (Disable HW overlays)? Why hasn’t there been a response (post/bug-fix) from Plex on this issue yet?

In the case that I did miss something along those lines, I extend my apologies. I had to dip into my Developer options again today and it irritated me enough to comment.

Seems that the issue is now fixed.
I’m using PLEX 10.15.1.659 on Google TV 4K STTE.240315.002.11695351

I too have updated my ccwgtv to latest and it appears to have fixed the issue on the two files I tested.

Looks that way over here, too. Did the latest Chromecast update, did the most recent Plex client update for Android TV, didn’t turn off HW overlay, and loaded up my go-to for checking frame-drops - Fellowship of the Ring, from Saruman sending the Uruk-Hai after the Fellowship to Aragorn pointing out the Argonath. It’s basically a 2 or 3 minute stretch that is almost nothing but helicopter shots and a variety of dollies and panning shots.

When this error first popped up, that sequence couldn’t go more than 2 seconds without a big hiccup calling attention to itself. This time, smooth as silk. No drops at all at 24fps.

I think we’re clear?
