Still happening for me on 1.23.3.4706, issue not resolved. It also wasn’t mentioned in the change notes, so it’s probably not surprising.
Would be nice to get a confirmation though that this is being looked into? It’s pretty obvious that it happens, so shouldn’t be too difficult to reproduce?

As @YourNightmare suggested, I tried re-doing the settings, but it doesn’t help. Still chooses English subs on German audio and no subs on English audio like I described earlier.

Can you guys specify what your audio and subtitle language settings are and what you expect to happen with the subtitles when picking the preferred audio language versus picking a non-preferred audio language? I think different people are expecting different things so I’d like to make sure I capture the correct expectations.

Audio - English
Subtitle - English
English audio track - Forced English subtitles
Non-English audio track - Full English subtitles

Subtitle Mode: On foreign language
Expectation:
German Audio Track: No subtitle
English Audio Track: Full English Subtitle
This was how it was working up to version 1.23.
It would allow me to watch shows in my native language with no subtitle being displayed, but when I watch something in English (which happens rather often), it’ll auto-select an English subtitle (if available) to be displayed.
So it’s not about forced/not-forced subs for me, but just to have subtitles on the shows that are not in my native language.
What it currently does is, it’ll enable English subtitles on my German shows, which is nuts, because German isn’t even my foreign language, so when the option says “Auto select subtitle on foreign language”, than why would it select a subtitle when watching a native language show? So whatever the case, this doesn’t make sense at all.
Contrary to that, it doesn’t select a subtitle when watching an English show. So it is quite possible that the subtitle selection itself works, but something with how it determines the languages is wrong?
Though looking at my show metadata, everything seems to be fine and audio languages are being detected properly.
Yes, i got almost the same settings as Phiolin
Language audio track - Dutch (my native language)
Subtitle mode - shown by foreign audiotrack
Language subtitle - English
I can confirm that by using those exact settings before version 1.23 the behavior was exactly how Phiolin has mentioned.
How it was before 1.23 / when it worked:
When watching my native language (Dutch) movies, no subs are selected, because the “language audio track” is set on Dutch and the “subtitle mode” on “shown by foreign audiotrack”
When watching my English (foreign audio track) movies, it automatically enables the English subs.

Ok, got some info. There was a recent change to the logic used for this. The preferred subtitle language is now the primary language used for making decisions instead of the audio language like before.
If you have both the audio and subtitle languages set the same, you will not notice a difference.
For those of you that do have different languages set, the results will be different from what they were before.
I don’t understand how that could work. Could you give a few examples?
E.g. how would I configure Plex to not show subtitles for my native language (whatever that is) and show english subtitles for all other languages?

That’s the issue. By setting English as your preferred subtitle language, you’ve essentially told Plex that English is your native language. So it is not possible to hear another language without subtitles.
That makes zero sense to me.
Can you describe even a single scenario where that change leads to anything useful?
The option even says „on foreign audio“. So why would it use the subtitle language setting to determine the need to enable subs instead of the audio language?
I can’t see how this is a useful change. I would like to know what the intention behind this is to get an understanding of how that’s supposed to work…

I could potentially watch an English show with German subs - which I personally find super confusing as my brain can’t really process that.
That said, can we then not just add another option to get the old behavior back and have both ways - best of both worlds? That can’t be too difficult, right? It worked perfect for years…
By the way, my example above really makes zero sense because many foreign (German) shows are dual language files. So that Setting would in most cases select the wrong audio track for my native language shows and render the subtitle selection even more useless. I would basically be forced to manually change audio tracks every time on my native shows, or leave automatic subs disabled and select subs manually on my foreign shows. So there’s no way that setting makes sense for probably any non-english speaker.
How could that be an acceptable new behavior? That doesn’t make any sense. If there is really a use case that would profit from that change, both ways should be supported. Otherwise just revert the change please.
